Kinda reminds me of the plague doctor mask.

A couple of shots from this morning. This is the Ryan Field Airport. At the beginning of WWII, they trained Aviation Cadets here.

(I did take color photos with my a7rIV too and I'll post them later. :-))

That's a DC-3 on the right. I'm not sure what the smaller aircraft on the left is.

My dad used to work in an airfield very very much like that Gene. Bringing back memories.
He painted canvas covered wings, so even earlier (in appearance) than what this portrays.
Very much enjoying this work you're doing.

The smaller aircraft looks like it might be a Beechcraft 18 (external link) or a Lockheed Electra (external link). I've skydived out of a DC-3 and a Beech 18 at the Lodi, Calfornia drop zone.

Thanks Robert. After I received my uncle's military records for his time in WWII, I discovered that he was an Airport Control Operator at Ryan Field prior to enlisting.

If you noticed the dates of his jobs, after his last employment as a farmhand in Nov '37, my uncle joined the Army and served at Schofield Barracks, Oahu, Hawaii. He was discharged from the Army in Feb of 1941 and worked at Ryan Field until Sep of '41 where he then joined the US Marines on the 18th of November, 1941. Talk about timing.

Thanks Tim. Here's a different angle of the aircraft from my Sony camera.

Let us know what you think, is it worth the $100 to upgrade from 3. I was afraid this would happen, they release a new version that requires more money...I already have more invested in the DXO version than I did in the NIK version before Google bought it...but...I use it on everything.

Poking around a bit it seems to be N62936, which is a Beech D18S, registered to the prop and jet museum of Riverside CA. Looks like a fun airfield to poke around!

Travis, I believe it’s $60 to upgrade. Good through end of June.
