The reason I was swaying towards the mk2 is because you can use the filters without gaskets as it has light leak baffles. With my Lee filter holder I need to ask extra gaskets at the edges as the opening is wider then the standard square gasket.

Is it the pro filters you use? From what I’ve tried with the 10 stop they seem great

I would prefer gaskets over the fiddly little pieces...I would lose them or drop them constantly. I have the older first generation Firecrest filters. I bought them when the Ultra line was released and got them for great prices.

Ah I didn’t realise it was removable pieces I thought they would just be permanently in there. Gaskets does sound the way forward then

yeah you have to put the filters on and then snap them on...it comes with two versions. It just looks a pain to me.

A little Long Exposure ICM using the Syrp Genie Mini II. I have ideas for a new abstract series done like this.

Had another look at it and see what you mean now. I’m actually going to give it a go anyway as it’s just as cheap to buy the kit which includes it than buy the individual filters without the holder. Going to sell all my Lee filters

Very curious to hear your impressions on it once you give it a go in the field.

Will do. One thing that isn’t clear at the moment is if you can use the light baffles with the soft grad in, I suspect not. That could lead to light leak when combining soft grad and full ND

Thanks.

Ah ok, really cool effect on that shot

I don't see how you could use them with a rectangular grad...but I have not had one in hand so...maybe send them an email and ask?

I just went all in and ordered :)

Went for this - https://www.formatt-hitech.com …rdi-signature-edition-kit (external link)

and this - https://www.formatt-hitech.com/100mm/firecrest-nightscape (external link)

Going to sell to offset the cost - Firecrest 10 stop (its the previous version), Lee 6 stop, Lee 10 Stop, Lee 3 stop resin grad (the firecrest one is glass), Lee CPL

Feel like I have got the landscape bug back which is good, feel motivated to get out at key times after what feels like a couple of years not having the bug

Watched a YouTube video there so it transpires it comes with closed end caps for when only using NDs (and the CPL) and also comes with end caps that have a slot in them so you can slip in a rectangular grad filter in front of your ND. The slot is wider than it needs to be though the review said so may need to experiment and see if it’s an issue. It still looks like the closed section will stop light going between the ND and the lens. Looks like you could add a bit of black tape permanently though if it was an issue to close the gap and slip the grad past it (or even a bit of gasket foam). Time will tell

Congrats on your new filter kit Eddie. I’ve debated going with a magnetic set just make working with them in the field easier.

David, I traveled through Kansas today on our way to visit family in Fayetteville Arkansas. I can see why photographers like storm chasing through Kansas. Beautiful open sky. Very green right now.

I miss the Flint Hills between Topeka and Manhattan. Beautiful country with loads of interesting photos to be had. Storms are indeed spectacularly awesome on the plains!

Speaking of Fayetteville, have you been up to Bentonville to take in the Crystal Bridges Museum designed by Moshe Safdie?

I have not been to Crystal Bridges but it’s on my list for this trip. I hear it’s an amazing place. Thanks David. I was wonderfully surprised by Kansas. Would be nice to visit KC a few days.
