Sony Lens repair

Glass calibration and electronics repair...... $580 before tax. After tax and with Sony pro discount $503 to me. Not as bad as I thought.

Should know on timing tomorrow. The rep said that parts like elements are possibly in stock but order has to process first She said I have a good chance at a quick turn.

The A9 checked out fine.... I have an old red spot on the screen in the back for a while now they wanted $370 to replace that screen I declined that I can live with it until i go to sell. So that is cleaned checked etc for free on the sony pro

glad it was not too bad. At some point I want to send my 85 GM in to have the front element replaced. Also good to know what the rear screen would cost on the a9...although I doubt I will fix it, it has been scratched since day 1 and it has never bothered me.

Can anyone recommend a tutorial in some form for shooting the Milky Way? I don't plan to use a tracker. A little less than a month for our trip to the Davis Mtns and a visit to the McDonald Observatory. Dark sky area in West Texas so there will be opportunities. TIA

Are you wanting the basic settings as a baseline, or settings and editing?

lovely soft light...I wish we had such cool places like this nearby...anything near us with elevation changes is covered in trees, dense thick forest that you can't get to or access...

Thanks Travis. The coastline towards the west isn't as nice as the more Eastern end though..... I just had to shoot here, less than 5 minutes from where we were staying!

Depends really on what lens you are using....

Ultimately, your aim is to maximise light gathering. Fairly wide open aperture, longest shutter speed without star trails and then iso to suit/what you are happy with.

I think around 15 seconds at 20mm and 10 at 35mm if you are being fussy on the trails - you could go a bit longer and I doubt anyone would notice. ISO I'd start around 1600 and adjust from there.

Shoot multiple frames - I stack about 6 images.

Amazing, and beautiful. It's got a small head in comparison to its body.

You need to screw down those trip hazards. Not good for snakes

Travis, thanks. I will give them a look. These will likely help me decide how to answer Lee's questions to myself.

I 'm pretty limited on that end. Both are f4 lenses, one being the 16-35 and the other is 24-105. I'll be using the a7R3 but could use my wife's original a7. Thoughts on those? Appreciate the input, Lee.

Ummmm..... I would go with the camera with the best high ISO without a doubt. I have shot on the A7 at f/4 with the CV21 but obviously at 3200 the A7 is...... terrible...? Stacking several images does improve the noise but it's better not to have it in the first place.

16mm would allow for a slightly longer shutter speed too than 24mm - maybe 25 seconds. At f/4 with an ISO to suit. Also, don't be afraid to over expose a little.

I use the 20G or 35GM so much bigger apertures.

We love serpents. Found two giant Black Rat Snakes two days ago in the yard, probably the ones that live in our house=gladly so. We hate mice; one
reason we have 3 cats and have added a Schnauzer.
We do watch where we step when walking about, no desire to trip on one ;)

I heard two hawks in the bank of trees to the left of the dock. Got on the sit-on-top and ventured out.
Watched them fly off from a distance :(
I'd fed the Canadians about 30 minutes earlier so sat in the middle of the lake with a coffee and waited.
Sun of course never crosses the ridge when they collectively take off, so ISO 12,800.
