Looking for some advice please fellow Sony users, with my A77 ii with the mirror design I am getting more noise as expected, compared to my old Nikon D7200 I would say my A77 ii is about a Full stop more noisy.
My dilemma - I shoot mainly things that fly - Planes/BIF and with my lens having its sweet spot at f8 and to freeze movement I need at least 1/1600s.

I have been using Auto ISO set to min 100 and max 1600, and have found that my combo under exposes so I have been using the EC and dialling + 1 stop, this has been tending to give me the higher end of ISO's even in good light normally from 640 to 1000Iso and the noise is really quite bad even breaking up the details of the objects - Planes or BIF.

So I have come up with the idea to try to reduce/limit my ISO in Auto down to 400 and expose further to the right by increasing my EC to + 1.3.

Do you think this will work dropping my ISO by a full stop and exposing and extra Third by EC adjustment.

P.

I don’t have any experience with Sony A mount bodies but I feel that what you are suggesting won’t make a difference I.e underexposing by 1.3 stops then adding 1.3 back on by exposure compensation will give you the same image as if you had just exposed it correctly in the first place (and the same noise).

Apologies if I am misunderstanding you here

In this scenario on an E mount camera you could underexpose but use the correct shutter speed and then increase exposure in post to avoid high iso noise but I am not sure the Sony A mount sensors have the same latitude to recover under exposure (as I’ve never used one). Doing it in body though with EC won’t give the same result

As Eddie said.

You can't get more exposure compensation with a fixed aperture and shutter speed without increasing ISO.

If you want a lower ISO you either have to open the aperture or slow the shutter speed.

Hi, I agree with Eddie and Lee. What I would add is that we often get a bit stuck on the idea that our lenses have a sweet spot and therefore we should always shoot at that aperture. And that sweet spot often applies to improving corners, whereas the centres of the frame can be sharp (ish) wide open. If you are shooting planes anything like I have then you’ll be cropping into the centre quite a bit. I wouldn’t be surprised if the extra stop (?) you gain from shooting wide open has a net gain weighing up reduced sharpness and reduced detail from noise.

Thank you for the comments folks, what I have been trying to do is ETTR and at the same time retain enough S Speed to freeze plane movement or BIF for that matter, also with the Tammy 70-300 VC being most sharp even at the centre being f8, I understand the A77 series due to the SLT mirror is close to a stop more noisey than similar crop frame DSLR's like the D7200 etc.
Even at 640ISO the scene has a lot of noise and when cropping into the centre, even with good de noise software it cant remove the noise well enough.

I like it, but it’s a lot slower than topaz denoise on my m1 Mac. The results are really nice and it’s cool to not have to pay on top of the Photoshop plan. If I didn’t already have topaz I’d be happy with this version for sure.

Its crazy, although I still use Topaz for some stuff. I find Lightroom is very slow

So, our blue tits fledged two weeks ago. We woke around 7am and we think they must have all fledged an hour or two before - so an early start! So I grabbed the camera and sat on the decking for an hour or so. One of the chicks hid in our bamboo, so the parents were buzzing round for ages trying to get food to it. Gave me some good photo ops. Turns out blue tits move fast! They certainly don't stay put for very long, so quite pleased with these. The first four are the parents, and the second four have the chick in! The one on the old tree stump is a big ol crop! All on the 7iv with 200-600, and some using the new LR denoise.
