Travis, they are going strictly cloud based after the next standalone update I believe. After 2017 you won’t get any standalone updates as I understand it

I think they will continue subscription for Lightroom desktop (currently Lightroom CC) but not the standalone version.

That’s what I mean, from 2018 it will only be cloud based. You will still be able to run the standalone versions available now but they won’t ever get updates. I may finally have to go CC myself

That’s correct Eddie. We will have two cloud based options going forward. One will be geared toward mobile power users.

In terms of cloud, I use my mom's connection as "cloud". Running the same NAS for many years, a solid synology is probably good for a lifetime. My current router offers FTP and NAS functionality, and it's pretty fast too, so it costs nothing. 2 ports at USB 3 speeds, pretty handy, but not quite as good as a full featured NAS.

another thing I do is go revisit my collection every few months and delete non keeper raws, keeping your system really tidy means that maintenance can extended for many more years due to less drive usage. If I already exported processed jpegs from 10 years ago, the likelihood that I'll do that again is small, and the likelihood that I care about non keepers from that era is zero. Delete. A Tidy collection takes a whole lot less room than say 20-40K images I go through each year. So a cleaned up collection could have 160GB vs a non clean collection of 1.6TB. If I delete snapshot raws, I'de probably be down to 40GB of storage needed per year, so keeping clean can be really helpful.

with cloud, business model can change and that can cost you.

They are catering to people that use phones or don't want to store their files on hard drives, is basically what it boils down to,for professionals, I really think they will skip the clouds based, then again maybe they want them to get on it to...which...allows them to sell you more cloud space. I shoot about 1.75 TB a year right now...what I can't figure out from Adobe, is what the cost is if you need more than the 1TB they give you as part of your CC Photography Plan...I just can't see using it...I don't have gigabit service, uploading a 128 GB shoot would take forever on my service...and I don't need access to it everywhere...

I think in the future state of things when internet speeds can support it, most of us will be using cloud based storage vs local physical drives....or at the very least, have a cloud based back-up. I also think cloud based computing will allow things like tablets to do the things we normally do on laptops by moving the processing power needed to handle these tasks up to the cloud vs relying on the capabilities of the actual device. A lot of big businesses have already moved in this direction because its cheaper to lease cloud services than to have a lot of physical hardware on site.

For personal use $$$ side of things doesn't quite add up based on what I've been looking at...a 4tb external hard drive can be had for cheaper than equivalent cloud storage for one year. I suspect this will change eventually.

Yes, they move so fast. This one was so close is why it made me ask the question, I think its fine as is...was just curious. 85 at 1.4, DoF is so thin unless you are a loooong way away!

Hah yeah its more of a subject distance issue than necessarily an aperture issue. We started the sequence of shots with the couple several feet away, but I did not account for the fact that they would be running towards the frame.

Cloud based is also handy when you're told to evacuate your house with 15 minutes notice like I had to do last week Monday as the firestorm was heading toward my house. I did manage to grab my backup drives and my laptop, but had to leave the desktop PC behind.

The entire week I was sitting in the evac shelter I was thinking that I need to go cloud based for backup. We were lucky - the house didn't burn - the fire was stopped 1/4 mile away. Back home now researching cloud based backup options.

Yeah hurricane harvey is what actually got me thinking of going to the cloud. When you're forced to rush out of the house, grabbing my various external hard drives is less of a priority in the heat of the moment.

So from 2018, my standalone LR6 will not be updated by Adobe anymore? That sucks. Really don't want to be stuck with monthly payments, as I'm more of a one time payment guy..

well, kinda. The old LR4,5,6 stuff will not get updates anymore, you will have to be on CC...but CC now has a fully cloud based version, and a desktop version.

I keep a set of backups remotely...but we have a fire plan, or evac plan in our house...the hard drives are in a small handheld safe...its what I am supposed to grab...

nope, LR6 will not be updated anymore...and it sucks, but every software company out there does this, they don't want to support old software in perpetuity...that dedicates too many resources to old outdated stuff.

I'm afraid standalone LR6 users are out of luck. Looks like Adobe will not be supporting it. You'll either need to keep using it as is, upgrade to CC model, or look for an alternative like CaptureOne or other RAW editing programs.

.

I dont think the bold bit is correct. Lightroom desktop CC and lightroom CC will both be cloud based. The difference will be in the interface. Desktop is current setup and the other is geared towards tablets and mobile devices. There wont be a standalone version after the next update to 6.xx

Even C1 has a subscription model, days are numbered.

I'll have to tame down my GAS somehow or make my own lens profiles.

At some point, I would like to stop constantly upgrading, A9r :p

I'de like to think I'm 3-4 lenses away from a satisfactory lens collection, might even call it a day early with adapted lenses. (35f2, 24-70f2.8, 70-200 f2.8, 135 f1.8)

Owning software is over-rated. It has no value if isn't useful anymore. No value in an old windows 98 disc :-)

The exception is video games. I regret selling my old stuff when I was a kid because I had video game G.A.S

I don't use Lightroom but feel for those of you that are disappointed in Adobe's decision to end the standalone version. The PS CC for photographers hasn't changed monthly fees since it began and it includes LR as well as PS.
