I got an okay, but not great, result from using the moire reduction function of the adjustment brush in Camera RAW. I'm a novice when it comes to PS, so I'm guessing there are better techniques.

I'll give it a try! I had no idea there was a moire reduction function in camera raw

My justification for the a9 is that it is the closest lightweight to the 1DXii specwise. So far it is surpassing it. When I look at the Florida trip pics from two months ago I see that the vast majority of my keepers were at 400 or 400 with 1.4TC, so the hoopla about not enough long lenses will be moot when the 100-400 gets here, for me. I also think amateur hobbyist like me far outnumber the high paid NFL/Olympic shooters who want 400/2.8, 500, and 600mm.
So for me the hobbyist having the a7rii + a9 in the bag and shooting a variety of subjects (still smaller/lighter than a 1DXii) makes sense.

You got the a9?

You found enough of an advantage over the a99ii to get the a9 as well? I figured Sony's long lenses for wildlife on the a99ii would surpass anything with an adapter on the a9.

It remains to be seen how much of the a9 finds its way into the a7III. Too much and the a9 users might feel slighted. Too little and people might not see the rationale to upgrade.

The a9 is definitely more than I wanted to spend, but I figure if it'll last me a few years, it'll be worth it to not swap bodies so often by GAS.

Rumors say that the a7III will have the same exact focus system and it's possible it will have the same body. If the only carry over is the focus system I'd be ok with that. The 5DIV has the same focus system as the 1DXII, and I don't think 1DXII shooters feel slighted. However, if the a7III has the same focus system, same body, joystick, battery, etc. and 8-12fps and is sold at the $2800-$3200 price point I might hold a bit of a grudge.

there's no problem with the lens. it's sharp throughout the range and at any aperture. i just realized i prefer a 35mm prime. i do shoot group shots during receptions and I don't like to accidentally shoot at 24mm. and as a natural light shooter, a 1.4 lens works for me better.

good to know, thanks!

I ended up placing a rental on a a7rii+grip and buying the 70-200 2.8

hope the a7riii is worth waiting for otherwise that's 200$ i could have used for owning a a7rii. making a note to my friend so i can cheap out on their gift :D

I've been wanting one of these bad. I want one even more now that a photographer had one in our studio the other day and I got to check it out. Unfortunately I've just spent over $10K switching from Canon to Sony and I don't even have a backup camera yet! So that being said saving money is key right now lol. Gotta get my backup and then not spend anything else for a VERY LONG TIME.

One of my absolute favorite things about early-retiring:

Today I left the house to have a photo day trip. I headed South towards Columbus, GA - a favorite town near me. But, as I was driving I changed my mind and started heading towards Providence Canyon State Park near Lumpkin, GA (named after Fatty Lumpkin in Tolkein's LOR? :p) instead. But, on my way I was seeing signs for Eufaula, AL and thought it might be an interesting town, so changed my mind yet again.

So, I've been messing around in Eufaula all day and having a wonderful time finding all sorts of intriguing and interesting things to photograph. Also driving through the Eufaula National Wildlife Refuge has me, once again, dreaming of an FE 100-400mm.

Loving finally having a 35mm 1.4...the Sigma was the perfect choice for my needs and budget. I've seen a few comments here about giving up a 24-70mm in favor of an FE 35mm 1.4 ZA. Couldn't agree more. I would LOVE to have a 24-70mm GM - I think it renders beautifully for a zoom - but not over my 35mm's dead body. Gotta have a 35mm and it's gotta be an f/1.4. :)

A FE 35mm 2.8 ZA would be cool too though.

i have a friend who owns one. it seems good. many experience a fall on that because it's slippery. some folks wrap around rubber bands on that to make it grippy. advice your friend to do it.

Oops! The moire reduction function is not in camera RAW, but under the adjustment brush in the LR Develop module. Sorry about that.
