check out this "How to Shoot an Annie Leibovitz-style Group Portrait with Affordable Gear"

would you do this though?

https://petapixel.com …portrait-affordable-gear/ (external link)

Nice. I can appreciate the method and would consider doing that actually.

I have a failed attempt at doing something similar at a wedding because its so hard to control the light when you have a large group, and for that type of shot you want a lot contrast between the people and the background. The problem is when you try to light a lot of people simultaneously, you're using multiple broad lights that spill all over the background, and you get nasty cross shadows and what-not.

Yup. And I love how discrete they are....I find myself listening music when doing things like walking around the mall, on my lunch break, whatever. Everyday life has a soundtrack now hah

Yes thats a good way of putting it.....nowadays I'm more of a music lover than an audiophile these days. I had an audiophile phase, and after a while it really becomes more about an obsession with the technical aspects of the gear than the actual music...very much akin to buying photography gear just to pixel and shoot brick walls. I think I've settled into a happy medium where its more about the music, and I care about the gear only to the extent that it can faithfully reproduce the music. I don't need all the technical nuances I used to look for when I would listen to the gear, and not the music itself. Nowadays convenience takes precedence over pure audio quality...so compressed audio be damned, I'm all about streaming services!

Funny thing is my dream was always to have a dedicated home theater/listening room and I never use it because it's not worth the hassle. I really want to turn that space into a studio.

I’m about the same. Put in the AirPods all the time. I was buying HD Tracks for a while. I think it was all placebo honestly. Now I just use Apple Music and Spotify and they sound great to me.

I also built a dedicated home theater. Never got around to doing much with the speakers and now I hardly use that room. I love it when I do, but it’s difficult with 4 little ones.

Really interesting blog post by one my favorite photographers. Definitely gives you something to think about regarding the influence social media can have on us.

That article can be summarized as: "I turned off phone notifications and it changed my life" :-P

it's really that simple if you dont want to be consumed by social media.

there are only a handful of notifications I leave on or allow to make noise. Messenger...... uhh I treat it as an alternative to SMS, I dont have everyone's phone number or care for it, this works. Email... it's universal communication, and more often than not, it's for something important rather than killing time on social media. Viber/skype, sometimes I run this to talk with international folks. Eventually, going to the iphone x to take advantage of iMessenger/Facetime, I'm all for expanding communication lines, many folks dont do social media, and imessenger/facetime is ideal for them.

I can totally relate to this, I deactivated my Facebook for two years as I felt like any spare split second I had in my day I was pulling my phone out and checking it like I was a robot. I put it back on recently but I am deliberately using it less. I now feel that I’m stuck in a constant cycle of checking potn, then FM then SAR, then repeat, then repeat etc. Trying to kick that habit but it’s hard

an interesting read for sure. I think that one has to set some boundaries...in our house we have several that are no tech zones, and then other times that its ok...I think we need to restrict them a bit more...because much like the article, I feel the best when I am somewhere that I know my phone won't work...I love those times...

If this is the wrong place I'm sure someone will let me know...but I'd appreciate some input.

Most folks I've read on here are happy with their CC subscription, I haven't subscribed rather have always used the purchased model and I feel Adobe had intruded on my independence to my detriment and would appreciate any assistance to extricate myself from a straitjacket that I didn't know I was in TBH

I never knowingly subscribed to Adobe CC.. in fact I know I didn't but they stuck their software on my PC

I have standalone purchased versions of LR6, CS6, PS Elements 13 and Premiere Elements 14

I noted the formal notification from Adobe that we will be parting company by their parting gift of an update to LR6 which will not update.

Somehow although I've purchased my OWN copies of their software, they won't let me go without a fight.

Adobe Application Manager and Adobe Creative Cloud software somehow weaseled themselves on to my machine and will not leave whatever I do.

This uninvited software management/straightjacket will not go because there is software on my machine that is has decided to manage (see above).

Thus I don't get my final parting gift of the last update to LR 6 Standalone.

I have to admit I don't think I will miss a tiny little parting update from Adobe BUT I do feel I have the right to NOT be controlled by them going forward.

I doubt it but is there anyone on here who identifies with this modern day dictatorship?
Thanks for any help...
Jamie

Can't you just uninstall everything and re-install LR6 standalone without going through CC?

I think I'm going to cancel my CC subscription and use capture one to do my basic processing actions and cataloging....just use good ole PS CS6 when I need to make deeper edits until a true photoshop replacement comes along.

I’m way more worried about the advancement of real authoritarian dictatorships in the world right now than worry about made-up ones.

B&H has an A-mount 50A in "9" condition for $599. I don't need it, right? :)

Very very nice Mickey.
A big range of emotion caught in the last...from pure innocence to a serious case of mischievousness.

Thank you sir!

So perhaps in your view of the world David you are focused on a bigger picture of authoritarian dictatorship and far be it for me to intrude on your mission. Perhaps you will succeed however you clearly have no idea of being in the situation where having purchased products which you are prevented from rightfully updating.
On my part, clearly something you are not experiencing, I am stuck with being dictated to by a company that took my money but thinks they own me matters to me a lot. So our experiences don't coincide and your response and your FFS was of no assistance whatsoever
Notwithstanding this, thanks for even being bothered to reply.

Jamie

Note I have four Adobe products involved to re-install? Surely the Adobe Tail is wagging the Customer Dog? Or am I just so out of touch with reality that I don’t get it?
Ask for help (not you) and mention dictatorship and the last thing you are going to get is helpful/understanding responses but rather invective as if I’m making up “Authoritarian dictatorships”.
Gimme a break. It isn’t THAT important so as you were. My apologies for asking.
