According to Roger Cicala who owns lensrentals is not to fond of the 12-24 but loves the 16-35GM

Can you post a link? Every thing I've seen from Roger is he's impressed with the 12-24mm.

It's not fair, really, to compare the 12-24mm to a 16-35mm. Rather, it should be compared against Canon and Sigma's 11-24mm and 12-24mm models. Compared to those Roger finds the Sony 12-24mm to be superior.

But even against the 16-35mm GM he says:

I put this comparison up because I know some people are interested in it. Obviously, the 12-24m is much better from 12-16mm. I don’t have 16mm data on the 12-24 because we only test 2X zooms at their extremes. But I can compare them at 24mm. There’s not a lot of difference between the GM at f/2.8 and the 12-24mm at f/4.

Optical quality be damned, I'd take the size of the Sony 12-24 over the Sigma or Canon regardless.

yep, LR on the 12-24

Summary
This was a test of the MTF of a new lens. It was not a lens review. Had it been an actual lens review you would have been instructed which lens to buy via a handy click link at the bottom of the post. It was simply an MTF test. There are lots of other things that go into selecting a wide angle lens; flare resistance, autofocus accuracy, reliability, how it handles, etc.

The MTF results tell you if the lens should be a sharp lens, and the results here indicate that it should. That makes it worth further investigation for those of you interested in this focal length. It’s one of the more impressive Sony offerings that have come out; reasonable price, excellent MTF, reasonable sample variation.

There is something that is more interesting to me in the bigger picture, though. Sony has made this lens smaller than the others in this range, which will be nice sitting on an FE camera. And they’ve done that without the customary ‘Sony surcharge’, which is nice on your wallet. At this point, I can’t help but be very impressed.

Addendum:

Several people have asked about the field curvature of this lens, so I’ve posted the field of focus at 12mm and 24mm. Both are really flat at infinity, most impressive.

I've used the 11-24 and 12-24g on the A7r, cant say there's much difference in IQ, but that size though :-P

Yeah I tried the Sigma out last year. Ridiculous lol. Plus that front element scares the crap out of me.

Regarding...”I think you need to find someone with a bit more knowledge about computers than what you have so that they can work on doing your installs and reinstalls,”
Don’t know how you are in a position to say that. Been working with PCs since IBM PC 1981.
I’ve not been ‘upgraded’ to CC that I can see and I’ve subscribed to nothing.

Jamie, I use the standalone versions too and haven’t subscribed to CC but I don’t have any cc software on my machine so can’t really offer any advice. If it was me I would try a complete removal and reinstall

Speaking of the 12-24 again, Astronomik wrote me back to say they are working on a ND Clip filter
for the sony a7/a9 platform.
That sounds good but in same e-mail he asked (maybe Germans don't know our acronyms and pure
astro guys don't speak the same language as photographers-example they can an exposure a 'sub') what
a CPL is.

But if they ever do put out an ND I'll nab one and of course report back to the SonFam here :)

Beautiful colors and tone. I don't pay attention to buildings but this is just a fantastic image.

Thank you Daniel. I had intended to process this as a vertical pano but there was too much wind. That’s why the top of the building is cut off a bit.

So, looking at my CV 15mm corners I'm not blown away. Not what I’d call terrible, but doubt it is as good as a 12-24mm @ 15mm. Doesn’t look like smearing, just softness. Now I'm trying to decide what to do. Options:

1. Return the 15mm, keep my FE 55mm 1.8 (which I'm pained to have to sell).
2. Return the 15mm, sell my CV 12mm and FE 55mm and buy a 12-24mm.
3. Live with 15mm - it's not terrible; I'm not a complete corner sharpness freak even for landscapes.

Really been struggling with this all week.

David that’s disappointing to read about your copy. Maybe try another one?

77mm filter trick can get you as low as 14, however that's a little too close for comfort and I have mine set around 15-16mm with a thicker than normal ring from a trashed thin CPL.

pretty sure this shot was at 15mm + filter trick: https://photography-on-the.net …showthread.php?p=18500728

the thing I like about the filter trick is the way you mount it, it's like putting on a lens cap, you simply wedge it on, and it sticks due friction. It's super fast in practice, and being conventional filters, takes minimal space. Due to the tendency of using the wide end, I decided only 1 filter was needed for my style, a 6 stop, as I love water textures and you kind of need longer exposures the wider you go.

my other lenses use a magnetic filter, which sticks on similarly to the filter trick. Gotta say, I really like that style, as it's super fast and small. My filters dont take up much space, and very fast in the field. Sunsets dont last very long, so I can appreciate that sorta thing.

but but but..... what if you are on a bridge in 30mph wind gusts.....and the NISI filter just falls...... I would have to cry. And since I have vertigo it would be double bad.

That is my only concern with this if it falls off.
