I'd have to do some more testing but I think focus hunts more using the 2x extender. It's fine for static shots but for AF tracking, I don't think it's up to the task. I'm curious if the 1.4 extender tracks as well as the bare lens does.

Well I'm taking the Riii and the a9 on this next off weeks trip (more owl hunting)....AF-C probably won't matter. If I find on most likely it will be sitting on a fence post. I think, considering my last experience, I'll take the DOii for the F4, F8 with 2.0.....so if I end up having to push in post I'll be better off. I can only dream of getting one flying but that won't happen in the dark. But thanks to you Gene I've got Memory slot 3 for flash so ISO is set to 800 e.g. no auto-ISO, shutter at 1/250 sync, etc.

David A - do you still have the CV65? How do you find it now you have had it for a bit? (Apologies if my memory has failed me and you have sold it)

Does anyone else own it? Alfredo?

I sold it. It was going to replace my FE 55mm, but the smaller size and AF of the 55mm proved too appealing to replace with a heavier MF lens even though the CV 65mm is otherwise is superior optically.

I have nothing but good to say about the CV 65mm, but it just didn’t catch on with me solely because I discovered I am too attached to the FE 55mm.

it might be because the 100-400 with a 2x TC results to an f11 min aperture and the a7R3 can't do tracking at f11 I think max is f8 for R3. A9 can do f11 though.

Thanks David. I must admit I’ve been feeling a bit of GAS for the CV65 for a while now. I was all set for adding the Contax 35-70 for my landscape kit but torn between these two lenses. 35-70 makes more sense as I have a gap from 24-100 in that kit but I love CV lens build quality, contrast and sun stars. I’ll be keeping my 55 as I like the 28/55 combo for a small walkaround setup. My landscape kit will either be -

Cv15/lox21/sam24(Astro)/CY35-70/CY100-300

Or

Cv15/lox21/sam24(Astro)/CV65/CY100-300

I’m in no rush though as the main thing for me this year is to just shoot more landscapes as last year was pretty poor in that regard due to other commitments

My biggest GAS issue right now is wanting a 16-35mm. Might consider a used Canon EF 16-35mm f/4L IS because I miss having one. I’ll need to sell some gear odds and ends though because I don’t want to sell a lens in order to finance another lens this year.

The canon f/4 is a great lens as you know. I sold mine to Johnph on here and he keeps posting stunning images with it and every time I see them I feel regret :-)

I might go that route too David. I was really happy with the Canon 16-35 F4 IS.

For zooms, I would think the Sony FE 12-24mm and FE 24-105mm would be ideal for a simple two lens kit with a great focal length range and quality. Unfortunately, I have neither, having gotten the FE 16-35 mm f4 and 24-70mm f4 lenses when they first came out. Those lenses are still a great combo in my book but sometimes I wish I had the greater wide angle/telephoto capabilities of the other two lenses for the extended range of 12 to 105mm.

I've consider that a lot TBH, but I'm not GASSING for it.

the lens looks great on FM, but I think I would still need a long lens to compliment. If you dont care for anything longer than 105, then the 12-105 setup would indeed be very nice.

Now that you mention it, with my FE 100-400 lens and the 2x extender, i could have a range of 12mm to 800mm with just 3 lenses and one extender.

Just decided to market my Fe 16-35/F4. Just not used last three trips due to the 12-24+24-105. Maybe I should mention there here before
FM ?

Can anyone here recommend a pdf editor that's either free or super cheap to buy a license to?

Every time I sell photographs to a company they're always asking me to edit a W9 pdf form. In the past I've used trial versions of Adobe and other softwares, but it's getting really irritating that simply editing a date has to be such a damn ordeal everytime.
