Its been about 5 years since I built a PC so technology has changed in that time. I found this site which has some good info - https://www.pugetsystems.com …/Hardware-Recommendations (external link)

They recommend 32gb ram if you use large files in PS (which I do). The only bit I am unsure about is the CPU. This site here - http://cpu.userbenchmark.com …-Core-i7-7820X/3937vs3928 (external link) - suggests the 8700 is actually better than the 7820 but the benefit of the 7820 is the multi-core speed which will help when working in lightroom with multiple files

I was just wondering if any of you guys had recently done this as opposed to me believing what I am reading on these type of sites (where you can also buy the PCs from so a bit of bias perhaps?)

Head to Toms Hardware for the latest and greatest info on hardware to build a "puter"

The only gaming I do is PS4 when the wife and kids are out. Dont get much time at all on it anymore

my gaming is limited to on my PC...iRacing and the new Grant Turismo 7 is on PC as well, and I have been enjoying it...my wife tends to get very tired some days, and goes to bed much too early for me, so I have my headphones on and doing racing at night...

Here is one I am currently building. I am a bit stalled since the owner decided to go with hard tubing for the water cooling. So this weekend it should get wrapped up, and then I will get some non-cell phone pics.

Do you have a steering wheel set-up? I've always wanted one but my wife would never have a bigass rig like that in the house lol

In my old house before we had kids I had a Logitech steering wheel and pedal set for gran turismo. I then purchased a bucket seat From a rally car on eBay and a leather upholsterer I knew re-upholstered it in black leather. I then built an MDF thing to set everything up so that the pedals and wheel were in the correct position for the seat. It was amazing fun. I would play gran turismo and the F1 game. After a while though I sold the bits on as it did take up quite a lot of the spare room, plus my wife thought I had lost it

I just have one that clamps onto my desk for now...I have already made it known that when I have to buy a new computer, the old one will be hooked up to a proper seat and racing setup in the basement...

I mispoke...its Forza...Gran Tursimo is Sony...Forza is Microsoft and XBOX...either way, they are good fun...Forza 7 is all motorsport based and I love it...since I don't go to the track anymore, this lets me at least get excited about tracking...

You guys remember me mentioning possibly shooting the missions for a client in charge of preserving them? Well, my proposal was accepted! I'll be documenting four of our missions to track their overall condition. One mission per quarter and this may continue for 5 years. It's not the most exciting photography but I'll have access to areas the general public isn't allowed so I'll also take some personal images after finishing my paid work.

What size of monitors are you guys editing with (size and resolution)? Are there specific types of panels to go for? iPS etc?

I'm using a 30" Dell Ultrasharp IPS monitor. It's not 4K which is fine by me. I use an Xrite i1Display to calibrate it.

This may be a stupid question but here goes- do I need a high end gaming video card (as recommended in every build guide I read when building an editing pc) or will the built in video suffice since I won’t actually be gaming. Or is it required to bring the most out of the big panels?

Everything I've read suggest not to get the high end graphics card if you are not gaming. I'm not sure about 4K video editing which I'm sure could benefit from having a beefy GPU. I would get a dedicated GPU but a mid-tier one. Here is some additional considerations on choosing a monitor:

https://www.color-management-guide.com …r-for-photography.html#4k (external link)

Dell, NEC, and Asus make some really nice displays for photo and video editing.
