I picked up a 50 1.8 on the cheap today just to have a native lens thats small for walk around, and to see how the other focus modes act. To be honest, the eye focus is really cool, but the rest of the focus modes don't appeal to me much. The Sigma 50 art with the metabones on the latest firmware, is faster to AF and actually hunts much less than the Sony in low light. The sony is a really decent lens for less than $200 though!.

Heres a snap of my daughter with the lil' fifty

My new toy that arrived today. I think this is going to be a fun lens to play with. I haven't had much time to try it but it seems very easy to use thanks to Sony's great MF tools built into their cameras.

This lens is designed for Sony E mounts so it has an extended portion not found on this lens for other bodies. It's like it has an adapter built on and just attaches to my Sony a7rII like any other native lens.

Congratulations Gene. You know I dabble every now and then in macro and have always been curious about this lens. So you also have the FE90 macro and now this gem! Must be serious about the little things now!
No tell me how you talked Laowa into personalizing your lens ;)

Thanks. The FE 90 is one of my most used and favored lenses, both for macro and beyond. I'm hoping to feel the same about this wide angle macro for multiple uses as well.

I had to pay extra to have my name engraved on the lens... :p :-P ;-)a

Today's shots. Killing time waiting (29 days now) for the FE100-400.
The latest Metabones firmware works a charm on the 400DOii for perched and for AF-C tracking.
Job well done Metabones and Sony.
I do plan to shed the EOS 100-400ii when the Sony arrives, but if Sony gives up a 400/4 I'd be in a quandary since
my 400DOii is paid for :)

Ah, that's it Alfredo. Thanks.

And I think the AF behavior I was looking for is the "Pre AF" setting. I had it switched off because somebody on YT told me too. ;)

Keep pre af switched off, it's just annoying and you will miss shots because of it.

For tracking use af-c and keep the shutter half pressed. Your subject will be behind the flexible spot (I use small spot) you have chosen and the box will stay green meaning the focus is constantly changing as the subject moves

Unfortunately I was missing shots all over the place today because something is amiss with my settings (it didn't take me long to discover how terrible pre-AF is). I wasn't seeing any green boxes on my screen regardless...not sure what I've messed up.

That is odd. I can't even think what would cause the green box not to appear on a half press if it's set to af-c

User error; not knowing what I'm doing. I need to do more experimentation work to fully understand my camera's AF system. I might be misinterpreting your green box. I had in mind the green box that surrounds some subjects that are being tracked...not seeing that - whatever it's called - but I do see the little green focus confirmation box lighting up.

I think today I was wanting an instant knowledge fix without having taken the time to better know my gear in that way. I'll work it out. Anyway, I appreciate your help. :)

It's a shame it's no good, because conceptually it should be great (less focus hunting)... It's not good in real-world shooting; I get it. :)

yah saw a guy in youtube before sharing his settings and he recommended turning it off. i can't even remember why but I just followed his suggestion. i think it gets the AF keep on hunting. lame for sony adding that option if it's not even working.

Sorry I may be confusing you by not explaining myself fully. The green box I was referring to (when using small flexible point) is the focus point itself which turns green to confirm focus whilst half pressed. So when I am taking a photo of a person I move the focus point to where I want their eye then half press and keep it half pressed whilst maintaining position on their eye. What that doesn't do though is track so if the person moves you need to move with them to maintain eye focus or select another af mode I.e not flexible spot. I like to use af-c for this though so that if the person moves back or forwards it maintains focus. I realise now I think I was answering a different question to the one you asked :)

Exactly, it basically makes the focus hunt back and forward continuously. It's completely flawed.
