Not had a chance to really put the cheap FE28-70 to use yet......!!!

Here's a few 100% snapshot crops though at various focal lengths & camera/subject distances all at f/6.3 apparently...... Looking at the shed hook & the rear light on the car it doesn't look bad for handheld & low shutter speeds with OSS switched on.

Never got rid of mine. When I strip off the battery grip an put on the 28-70 I feel super lean :)

I thought I'd give an update on my slow motion Canon-Sony move, seeing as I've had a little while to play around with the camera. It's winter and a lot of what I shoot is not winter, but I've been testing and have some definite impressions.

The menu on the Sony is up front a challenge, but once customized the camera is quite good. Dedicated programmable buttons and 4 pages on my-menu save the day. I did have to spreadsheet that all out before programming it.

Battery life is not very good, and I can't imagine what the cameras other than the big-battery A9 / A7rIII are like.

With the 28/2 and 55/1.8, the system is exactly what I'd hoped for in portability. Internet pundits can debate grams and mm to their hearts content, but straight up the A7rIII is a much smaller body than my 5D3. The Canon with two small primes is still very big. The Sony with two small primes is just kind of big. :p

Two things I wanted to comment on that I'm really liking:

IQ is wonderful, and this goes hand in hand with focus accuracy. On relatively static subjects the AF system on the Sony is a pleasure, I love eye-AF and the focus seems very sure footed. I get absolutely nailed shots most of the time, including with adapted lenses.

Adapted lenses - To me what made me take the plunge was the ability to run the systems side by side and use my Canon zooms for static subjects on the Sony. I'm planning to keep the 5D3 for action for the time being, but I like having the option to speed up the move to Sony (buying FE lenses) or back up as needed. From what I've tested, the EF lenses are pretty good on the Sony.

With MC-11:
24-70 II - Great. Eye-AF and AF-C work great. No misses, no hesitation.

70-200 2.8 IS II - Very good. At first it hunted with multi-point small, but a bigger area fixed things. Eye AF works well.

Sigma 120-300 Sport - Very good. I was hoping this would work as the big Sigma is not always super accurate on the 5D3. It seems to work a treat on the Sony and eye-AF and AF-C work just fine.

85L II - Iffy. When it hits, it hits. But it kind of hunts and jerks in getting to focus and it locked up on me once.

I have not messed with the 100-400 yet, or put a TC on the Siggy. If the 120-300 works with a TC, that will be the bomb. I use that for long shots of softball batters where the focus is actually static once found, but where I have always struggled to be on the money with the 5D3. I resort to live view focus often, which sucks on a 5D3.

Nothing pretty here, but just snapping snapping snapping around the house to see what works, these are typical for adapted lenses using eye-AF.

David A / Carlo? / Alfredo (edit - Travis?) - if my memory hasn’t failed me you guys are all shooting with the Fe35 1.4. I don’t think I’m gping to risk another 16-35 GM (can’t be bothered with the hassle) so thinking I may finally try the 35 1.4 (that may be hassle too but I’m due a bit of luck). Feel free to talk me out it or tell me why it’s a great idea. Was thinking of waiting to see what sigma do which is the other consideration I have in my mind.

Thinking small and light walkaround is my 28/55 And my no compromise walkaround kit could be the FE35/B85

I love my FE 35mm 1.4 ZA! I won’t talk you out of it...I think you’ll like it.

Sorry to hear about your 16-35mm GM. Sucks that there is so much copy variation. I had the exact same problem when I tried FE 16-35mm F4 ZA OSS. My copy had unacceptably soft corners, so I returned it. I had a great copy a couple years ago, but sold it (stupidly) because I had decided to have a split Canon/Sony kit and wanted all lenses to be usable on both cameras.

Eddie, maybe one option is getting the FE 16-35 used and also the FE 35 f1.4 new?

Just amazing AF on those last two MM, I could only hope to have that steady a hand to do that too.

Cool. Intersting that you're having success with telephotos on the a7rIII. I haven't tried anything longer than the Sigma 135, which plays REALLY well with the a7rIII....but past experience with the a7rII and lenses like the 70-200II were not positive. But yes bigger AF areas have more success with telephotos...mostly for the initial focus. With the Sigma 135 I'm using a recall custom hold setting with a wide AF are to get the initial focus when the lens is really out of focus, then will use eye AF or a small AF point to focus a smaller area.

Gabe, Gene, thanks!
Only hard part was lying on the ground for an hour, seriously an hour laying low waiting.
For the camera part just keep the green squares on the bird and the a9 does the rest.
But reality on ultimate detail/feather detail, well the a9 is not an R2 or R3 but we know that
going it :)
Well wait, there is detail if I can get close enough, this one almost landed in my lap....kinda in my lap
for 800mm

I’m ok in the 85mm department. I thought recently I wanted to sell the batis and buy the FE85 just because I liked the physical look of it better, it had the eye af button and it was a tad smaller but it didn’t work out financially after selling fees. I’m glad I didn’t now as every time I shoot with it I love the images so don’t want to give it up. Ive also got the 90 for Macro (bugs me that I have two focal lengths so close but that’s just the way my mind goes with these things). So long story short the GM85 doesn’t enter my radar much but it does look awesome. Was it a 35 rental you had recently?

I was referring to more of my own internal dillema, between two great lenses I need...the 35 is a very nice lens and it has made it a difficult choice. its smaller than it looks, very light. I wish I had taken a picture of it next to the 50Art...I highly recommend the 35...yes mine was a rental to see if I liked it...

We had a beautiful sunrise over SATX yesterday. The colors and contrast from the Zeiss 35 ZE lens are very nice. This was single shot exposed for the highlights in the sky.
