Sony Lounge Thread MKIII (All Sony cameras welcome)

I'm pretty sure that the Arsenal kickstarter/pre-order has been discussed here in previous months, but has anyone ordered? Gotta admit, I'm really thinking about getting one. I rarely shoot on a tripod, but I would if I had an Arsenal, I do believe.

AF tracking doesn't work as well when the 2x extender is attached to the lens on the a7rIII but if you're not shooting sports or birds in flight, it's an amazing combination. I love mine.

I just realized that the example image I posted above was taken using my Sony a6500, not the a7rIII. In fact, I don't think I've used the 2x extender on my 100-400 for my hummer shots yet with my new a7rIII since I can get so close without it. I will see if I can get a decent shot using my a77III with this lens combo ASAP.

I’m sitting on the sidelines to see if it’s a genuine smooth reflections app replacement. If it is I’ll be upgrading to the 7R3 and purchasing an Arsenal

I’ve relapsed! In challenging my thoughts to sell the Canon stuff, I have been using the Canon glass on the Sony as well as using the Canon more again. I gotta say, in live view mode it functions much like a mirror less. And with the touch screen, picking what you want in focus is a quick tap away. Focus is very fast and accurate. And it’s easier (to me) to zoom in and view the focus more precisely.

When reviewing pictures, there is also NO delay to zoom in. The Sony I hit zoom and it’s gotta be a solid 5 seconds before it zooms in. I think they need a faster processor in the Sony. Maybe the R3 is better.

So now my GAS has brought me back to the 35L II. I need help.

That would be awesome! I would be interested in using the 100-400 with the a7rIII to try to capture BIF...

The R3 is fast if you're using the fast type cards for playback. I skimped for a while with slower cards till I found a sale on a fast 128 for ~100. 260MB/s up and down, playback is very fast. Touch to focus is really nice, use it all the time, but I wouldnt do that with a big lens or dslr setup.

it runs circles around the R2 if you're looking for a very responsive camera. I was testing out crop mode when shooting the eclipse. I parked it on continuous high shooting, and the buffer simply would not fill up

it's a crazy good camera and really has DSLR like responsiveness all around.

eye focus is like sticky glue, and I often use it in conjunction with the tap focus when multiple people involved. Utra fast programmable function to swap AF modes is one of the most enjoyable features for me, love to toggle between wide area, which excels at single person subjects, and toggle to point when I need a specific target. Rating system means that I cull in camera, so my workflow is vastly improved, I cull real fast in camera saves the hassle of culling in lightroom/c1, which is slower at zooming 1:1. I have a small personal rule about photography, that if an image looks good in a small display, it'll look even better on a larger display, and I like using this rule to pick my keepers.

Charlie, interesting you like wide area for people, I always use small point so I can target the eye. I assume wide only works at narrower apertures? Say 2.8 and up?

I use wide area + eye AF just to clarify. I find it's so simple at finding a single person and will most definitely find the eye. It can get tripped up with 2 people in the frame and sometimes I'll switch to medium point, tap on face + eye af.

my toddler is so fast and constantly moving, so even tapping on the face can lose track of her, while wide seems to find her consistently. It'll only give me problems if she's on the edge of a frame. For non human stuff, then I'm on AF point.

I do swap back and forth constantly, and the toggle has been super nice. No need to select settings, scroll up or down, ect. 2 of my most used modes at a push of a button.

btw, what's confusing is that wide area has a touch AF point mode.... I have not figured out how that works yet. When using that mode, eye AF doesnt work..... it's bizzare.

A little different view of the Super Blue Moon....

Used a Canon 1.4x III on this shot.

OK, here's a shot of the male Anna's that's going through molting using my Sony a7rIII + FE 100-400GM lens + 2x extender. Because the distance I'm shooting from is so close, at 800mm, the DOF is much narrower than at 400mm. The minimum aperture at this focal length is f11 which is why AF tracking isn't as effective as the same setup on the a9. Because I'm shooting so close, it's more difficult for me at least, to get a shot in flight as they fill up the frame so much, they fly out of it in an instant. Hopefully, I'll be able to get a shot of one in flight later today.

He isn't looking at his best at the moment.

(I'll sure be glad when the forum's camera database is updated to include the Sony a7rIII)

100400GM+2.0TC+a7riii wouldn't be my choice but with the 1.4 you have AF and
the amazing cropability of the big sensor.... it might end up a wash. Not saying you can't
crop with a9, almost all eagles and cranes in this album were cropped to some extent, some
to the max.

I was very tempted to get the 1.4x tele for my Nikon, till I found the 500$ price tag

found a cheap $40 1.4x for my nikon instead (tamron brand), IQ seems perfect as far as I can tell.
