For my 'product' style photography, I replaced the small bracket I have with a large one to support a background with more stability. I can even use one of the wood backgrounds with no problems. I wouldn't use a wood background if the 'stage were foamcore or other light material though.

Here's a shot of the brackets for comparison and placed under the 'stage'.

And the end result.

cool set up Gene. I've keep wanting to do something similar but lighter for a quick stage for products. I came up with the idea of using vinyl tiles you could buy from home depot and placing them together to create a bottom and back stage. something like these but different textures.

Now I realized one thing. I'd rather retouch someone's face than cleaning product photos. The only time i hate sharp lens. lol

Gene style but octabox. One thing, octabox isn't good for bottle. it won't give you that vertical specular light on the sides of the bottle.

Thanks. I've thought about using tile as well. The problem for me is that they are typically only 9" or 12" squares and would have to be mounted on something if more than one is to be used. I've found that foamcore board is excellent as a background in solid colors such as black, white and gray but beyond that, I've been trying ideas that are first, good looking and 2nd, cheap. The wood was given to me by a buddy. Because the wood panels are basically 'one dimensional', they are easy to lean up against a wall for storage. The foamcore I use are around 20" x 30" by the way.

I know I could do composites and add a photograph as a background and will when the subject is appropriate but for now, this is the easiest solution for me...and less work to boot. ;-)a

Cudos for shooting black lenses on a black stage and background. I think that must be the hardest thing to do, to be able to show the details of the lens and still maintain the 'blackness' of the background.

I might suggest using some kind of rim lighting to separate the lens from the backgound a bit more if you can. I'll see what I can come up with to shoot black on black.

Thanks for posting these.

Guys a bit of help needed.
If a man were to purchase the Sigma 14mm F1.8 and the man already has a Metabones IV T
will the Sigma not work on the man's e-mount cameras? Which is to ask do I really need to order
the MC-11 adapter.
Please say no to the MC-11.
Thanks
Robert

I'de skip it. At the current state of metabones, I'm not all that convinced that the MC-11 is better. The lens has massive DOF being a 14mm lens, just put on area focus and have at it for normal shooting.

according to DOF calculator, subject 5 feet out has 5 feet DOF.... so if you're shooting a person 5 feet out, you'll likely be covered by DOF. I have the MC-11, and 135 art, and I'm convinced that the 135 is no better on the MC 11. That lens requires super precision.

thanks Gene and you're welcome. I was hoping really for your feedback.

guess what, i also hold a naked speedlight(in slave mode because it's a canon flash) to fill for the front for about 1/16 to 1/8 power. I'm surprise it didn't illuminate the background as much. i was holding it about 3 feet.

Thanks! I've always leaned towards the exposing the highlights and pulling the shadows out in pp. This is going to be nice!

Here's my quick try using two strip lights but...I did cheat by selecting the lens in post, inverting and darkening down the bg. I also made a second selection of the lens to boost the highlights.

It's not as good as I would lke but I'll save this challenge for another attempt later.

I'm really enjoying my strip boxes. They're bigger than I would prefer but at $45 each, I couldn't go too wrong.

Charlie, just for my clarity, you'd skip the MC 11 correct? That the Metabones will do. Sole intended use of the 14mm will be wide field astro...occasional landscape.
