Yes, that's what created the rim light on the sides of my face, hair and shoulders. The beauty dish was shooting downward towards me just as it appears and the reflector bounced light back up to help fill the shadows. Here's another shot of me using that same setup.

Very impressive Gene and so much detail in the beard. My only nit would be a bit of a hot spot on your forehead. You're doing awesome work with lighting.

Gene that lighting is on point in everyway. And yes props for the separation of your black shirt from the background. Really nice

Thanks. I didn't need to do anything to the exposure in post and was pleasantly surprised how easy the setup worked. I did adjust the white balance, crop, remove redness from my eyes and blotchiness on my face. I did no dodging or burning to enhance the light and dark areas either.

Here's the SOOC file, just resized.

Thanks Alfredo. I'm not too concerned about the hotspot on me but if I was photographing a female, I'd use different lighting anyway and try to avoid any hotspots. I think this type of light is best for men with a little character showing on their face. ;-)a

I usually pick a nearby color and paint over the hotspot at about 20% opacity and build it up gradually until I'm satisfied with the look.

My approach to hot spots is to use the patch tool.

1. Ctrl-j to duplicate layer
2. Use patch tool to draw a selection around the hot spot.
3. Click inside your selected area and drag that selection to a nearby area that has similar texture.
4. Release mouse button, the hot spot is gone, but so is the the highlight.:-(
5. Ctrl-h to hide selection. Go to edit menu and fade patch selection. Lower the opacity (30% works for me).
6. OK and done.

that's what i do but in frequency separation. a blank layer in-between the texture and color layers. that way you still have the textures on top. Brush 100% opacity and 1% flow to brush gradually.

I created an action for my frequency separation so it's easy and fast.

Yep. Two light bulbs in there for the double star burst.

Hey MM

Not that is worth 5 bucks but i am trying to go in dec or jan

Eriet might be worth the money, but a friend in Florida I've shot with went last year. He said Bosque was good, but that there is another wildlife refuge type area about 30 miles away (north maybe) and that it had lots more types of birds/raptors.
I need to check with Poof and make sure she has that trip on the calendar. I know she's got me on a 25 day trip Yellowstone/Glacier end of August.

Here's my quick try using two strip lights but...I did cheat by selecting the lens in post, inverting and darkening down the bg. I also made a second selection of the lens to boost the highlights.

It's not as good as I would lke but I'll save this challenge for another attempt later.

I'm really enjoying my strip boxes. They're bigger than I would prefer but at $45 each, I couldn't go too wrong.
