Thanks to all for the good wishes – it really is appreciated.

I hope to very occasionally contribute, but mainly I am just pleased to again enjoy the great images on this thread.

Meanwhile, I am also pleased to discover that the local canal basin hasn't succumbed to the current Arctic weather, and is even showing a few signs of plant colour.

Nice. I'd love to see images of the more vintage canal boats that ply the rivers there.

Just for fun, If money was no object what would your ideal 2 Sony body combo be?

Edit - can’t be two of the same otherwise everyone will probably say 2xa7riii or 2xa9

Although I am really excited about the a7 III release, I’m also taken with the notion of uncompromised silent shooting. I love using silent shutter, but don’t want to fret about reduced image quality (12 bit, or banding, or rolling shutter), so my heart is moving back in the direction of the a9.

DR is a big deal for me with landscapes, but that’s already adequately addressed in my landscape camera: a7R II. 13 stops is plenty for what I’d use the second camera for.

My ideal two-camera setup then is a9 + a7R II. (I currently value the a7R II SR app more than the a7R III battery).

That said I still might go with an a7 III...just need a lot more time and want to see user reviews before making a final decision.

My ideal setup would be a7RII and a9. a7RIII would be my top choice if it had SR app support. I chose the a9 because my son is growing up fast and he'll be into sports soon. That and I also enjoy shooting birds and wildlife.

Am I allowed to pick an RX1RIII and A7III?

If not, I'd just add the A7III to my current A7 ;-)a

David/Alfredo, you both have landed on the same place as me. My ideal combo (I think) would be the A7RII (Landscapes) and A9 (Second body for everything else). The A7RIII would def be my choice if it wasn't for the missing SR app. I chose the A9 because I want my second body to be the AF machine so on that basis I want the highest possible performance to do that and thats the a9. The A7III is very appealing though for the price point vs what an a9 would cost me.

Having said all of that regardless of my choice if I go the two body route I am going to end up with 2 different batteries and 2 sets of controls which will likely annoy me switching back and forth. Thats why I keep going round in circles on this and cant come to a decision.

If I could live without SR the A7RIII & A7III combo might be the best compromise (I couldnt afford/justify an a7riii and an a9) because I would have same controls, same batteries and two bodies that have good AF albeit not a9 AF. I love SR though

A9, A7R3, A7R2

I'm not sure what's worse, not having SR (R3) or not having PP for video (A9)? By that standard, the A7R2 has the most features, but not nearly as slick as the A9 or the R3....... *sigh*.

well, that's a superficial sigh somewhat as I'm stupidly pleased with the R3 :p

You notice it...but I adapt. In use the 7r2 mostly on a tripod and in a much more deliberate, slow process. The a9 is the workhorse and on the move and I love the ergonomics and battery life...with the grip, I use it for a couple weeks off and on without charging...
