Below is a shot of my smartphone taken on my patio. You can see the view through the viewfinder of my a7r3 mounted on the tripod and ready to shoot a photo of a glass in my den. The unedited image taken from my patio is below that. I took the photo of my smartphone using my a7r2. :-)

On the rare occasion I need more than 10 seconds I use the smartphone app - once connected it works perfect really.

You can still use your smartphone to remotely control your a7r3 with Sony's Smart Remote App. Here's a video explaining how to set it up. I use it to remotely video hummingbirds. I can be at my computer indoors and monitor my phone's screen while my camera/tripod is set up facing the feeder. When I see a hummer come into view on my phone, I can either take a photo or start recording video.

Brilliant Gene. I forgot about that app. Thank you!

holy cow. nice collection of gears :P

what is your thought on 5d4+24-70 2.8 versus sony+24-70 2.8 ? weight and size.

also canon+70-200 and sony 100-400

ive told myself if i was going to get a 2.8 zoom i'll get a dslr because dslr would be more comfortable to use with the heavy lens. but i ended up sticking to sony to keep it one system. not sure if i made the right choice.

I too am curious about this. I've been contemplating replacing my 1Dx with an A9 and transitioning over to native lenses, but AF performance still worries me a bit, that and my wifes inevitable reaction when a new camera shows up. :-D

I have to say if these are outcasts, I can’t wait to see the ones you kept. First class imo

Thanks. To be fair, the main reason that I never edited that image was because of all the surfers bobbing in the water, coupled with the photographers that were sticking up out of the reef like a game of "whack-a-mole".:-P

Gene, just a thought, but if you make a black frame to sit behind the glass that just fills the frame of the image, and then light the glass from behind the background you'll get a crisp, even highlight around the edges of the glass.

Thanks. I did use a white card to bounce light up onto the rim of the glass and I should have done the same for the edges as well. It's the little details that I'm slowly picking up on...and hopefully remembering for the next time.

On your latest surf shot, I really like it except for the haloing around the dark rock in the water. You might use the clone tool in darken blend mode to remove it or at least lessen its appearance.

5d4 has a better grip on its own compared to the a9/a7r3 on its own but when you attach a battery grip on my a9/a7r3 its fine.

stick one of my primes and its game over really in terms of weight and size.

i could literately fit an a9 and the 35mm samyang in my sweatpants pockets!!!
