The queen is dead...long live the queen.

My neighbor found this dying queen ant and I wanted to photograph it while I could. I placed it on the leaf of a small flower branch I plucked and put on a light stand indoors.

Beautiful!

A technical question for you. Was this natual light, or did you use a strobe? If strobes, could you give a little background on lighting/modifier used, and the positioning of them?

Thank you! Wife got fed up with the strobe so this is actually natural light. The last bit of the golden hour is a very soft, directional light that you can use to light your subject nicely. I just positioned her so that the setting sun was off to her side.

Sounds like me and my wife...lol She can't deal with any type of setup for longer than maybe 5 minutes. I think she uses all her patience up with my two little ones. Pic still came out great in the end and makes for a nice story to remember.

Thanks!

Yes she has no appreciation for the process of taking portraits lol. The crazy thing is that she accompanies me on shoots pretty frequently and knows how I operate. I'm hiring someone next time hah

I missed the part about the argument. Surely she was well pleased with the beautiful image.

Nice!

Is the BH new too, or just the sticks?

I’ve been thinking about that particular BH lately. Seems like a cool design and would make doing level single row panos super easy.

Neither new, my original P0, love it to death. Maybe 3-4 years old now? Been through hell with it, and if it died, I’de simply get another one.

Works great for single row pano's super fast. I honestly dont pursue anything beyond a single row as complexity rises exponentially :-P

TQC-14

Never imagined a true travel tripod to be this stiff and sturdy, I'm shocked by the stability of this small setup. Total confidence in my longest lens I'de take on travel/majority of long lens shots, the cy 100-300. Incredibly stiff. The way I shoot nowadays, I purposely got the center column version, my first center column tripod I've had in ages.

I returned from my trip and spent some time taking apart my tripod and blowing all the fine sand off my lenses. Shooting around the ocean is tough! Not only on finding compositions but on gear too. I had cleaned my tripod immediately after shooting each morning but there was still some sand in the leg releases. Still, I had fun and hope I can share a few keepers.

I shoot by the ocean...... OFTEN.

What I can say is that it's best NOT to retract your tripod while shooting. Try holding off all the way till you can at least rinse it. Tripod disassembly and relube is a total PITA. If you have to retract due to a hike, best bring some water with you to wash off excess sand (your drinking water). Finding cool compositions can be challenging but it's a lot of fun at the beach, especially tide pools.....
