The nesting female is but 100 yds. from the house; the other one was taken on a recent cruise out on Rainy Lake.

Ooooh! Those are nice. Loons are such beautiful birds, yet down here we only have them in Winter, and always out on larger bodies of water. Since you mention the first is close by, I was wondering if you didn't shoot one in portrait mode to take advantage of the reflection, then you should go back! Just seeing that little bit, left me begging to see it on down.

Congrats on some fine captures.

Thank you, Keith. For whatever reason, I'm not fond of portrait orientation; I rarely shoot or crop that way unless there is no choice. And unfortunately where she is nesting is on one edge of a confined channel and with a 500 mm prime, I'm limited as to how far back I can get. And, as I said, they are really big birds. Anyway, thank you for commenting as I appreciate it.

These are very fine photographs, the detail you can see on these wonderful birds is well captured. In upstate NY we have a lake, Loon Lake, I love hearing their songs. I've only been able to see them from a far, my lens line up doesn't have the reach to capture any shots. Thanks for sharing.

Thank you kindly for taking the time to comment. MN has its share of Loon Lakes too. And it is magical to hear them call, especially at night. Once, out on the lake, we heard them calling wildly all night long. They are quite the bird.
