I have never seen these guys before!
Found this mating pair in our backyard. They were hiding on the side of our tree against our privacy fence. I saw the wings sticking out from the side and thought it was a bird building a low nest (weird), so I went to check it out. This is about 5 ft from our bird feeder too! Do birds not eat these guys? We are in West Michigan btw.

I couldn't get the greatest angle for the photos. They were between the tree and fence and the fence is only about 1ft behind them. I also didn't want to get too close and disturb them. Although, I did put my hand next to them quick to get an idea of size - they are about 5-6" across the wings!

QUESTIONS:
- Do they lay the eggs in the same tree they mate in or does the female fly off to find another spot?
- Does the male die immediately after mating?
- Does the female die immediately after laying eggs?

I'm sure you can find the host plant in google, however I've only found two cocoons before, and both were on buttonbush or globeflower along upland small streams, so that must be one host plant.

The male looks fairly well spent in #7.
