After an exhaustive period of contemplating the 6D, 5DIII or 5D IV, I finally decided to go all out and get the 5D IV. I really like my 7DII, but have been itching to go full frame for quite some time. I feel really guilty blowing so much money on one thing, but I'll do my best to justify it :)

My 7DII is like new so I can recover some cash there if I decide to sell it. And I won't need the 10-22 lens anymore either. So that helps.

I'm really excited to get into the FF world, but I'm sure I'll miss the extended "reach" compared to my 7DII. Give and take.

You won't miss the 7D2. Last summer I went all out to go full frame and got a 1DX2 and 5D4 (yes, I felt guilty about the money). I was using a 70D and 7D2 prior to that. The 5D4 and the 1DX2 have so much better image quality that I don't miss the "reach" of the 7D2 at all. I do need to be a little closer or forego some shots, but I don't mind. The FF IQ is just better. Also, the performance of the cameras is amazing. They "just work." I get more keepers with the new bodies. :-)

I think you'll enjoy your new camera for many years to come. Congratulations!

Image editing ok; C&C always welcome.

Nice move. I've been using the 80D and 6D. To get all the features of both bodies, I'd have to move to the 5DIV. I've made the determination that it isn't worth the cost for me. I hope it works out well for you. :)

I use both the 7d2 and 5d4, they serve different needs.

I agree with TeamSpeed.

You haven't stated what you will shoot with your FF, but in most cases nobody can tell the difference between a crop and FF photo.

If you're not spending your rent/food money on it, "I want to go FF" is all the justification you should need :) I keep muddling on the option of adding one to my 7DII, as well; in the last year (especially when hitting Nat'l Parks), I've run into MANY situations where I'd love to have been able to have the 5D on a tripod and framing my landscape(s) while having the 7D on my side for shooting wildlife wandering/flying by.

That's what I do with my 6D and 7D2, Eric. I might upgrade to the 5D4 at some point, maybe after seeing what the 6D2 looks like.

If I don't get the shots I want with the gear I have, the only optics I need to examine is the mirror on the bathroom wall. The root cause will be there.

There is no 'extended reach' on a crop.

Reach was put into quotes, so we know exactly what was meant there. ;)

I use the 7D2 exactly for that, so that with the crop and pixel density of the 7D2, I effectively have more reach than with the same FL on my 5D4. Digital reach, if high enough quality, rivals optical reach in many situations (not all though).

Numerous examples have been posted to show the advantages of a higher density good quality APS-C over the same image from a FF resized up to match. If you use a TC on a FF, then you level the playing field in this regard, IQ advantages often then go to the FF.

Yes thank you! I guess I should have added bold and underline to the quotes.

It's very likely I'll keep the 7DII. Like others said, it's another tool in the box...not a simple step up/down.

UPS guy came a few hours earlier than usual. I got this from B&H with the free SD card and 4TB external drive.

So after putting in a charged battery and SD card from my 7DII within 2 minutes of getting the package, I'm just grinning ear to ear. Totally impressed! I put the 24-105 II on this for a quick test.

Initial impressions:

- Controls are familiar coming from the 7DII so I'm off and testing!
- Touch screen...I usually hate touch screens, but not this time. Just going thru the menu to set things up, I can tell it's a game changer. Little things like this can make a huge difference.
- Unfortunately the mirror action is noticeably louder than the 7DII. Of course, Silent mode helps. Not a huge deal.
- I love the new AF selection button on back near the wheel
- My 24-105 lens feels like it's breathing fresh air! It just makes so much more sense opposed to the crop cameras I've been using for so long. 24 looks amazing! And 105 doesn't seem like I'm losing so much.

That's it for now!

I used to have 2 FF cameras (5D3 and 6D). Since I'm not shooting as many weddings as I thought, when upgrade time came, I went with the 5D4 and EOS M5 with adapter. Now I feel I have a very well rounded kit.

If you can afford it, I suggest you keep the 7D2 as it's always nice to have that extra reach and the image quality is indistinguishable in my opinion. You do get some benefits from FF (better bokeh, low light focusing and one stop better on ISO) but this doesn't stop my from getting excellent images from the M5. :-)

It'll be a tough decision. I'm sure I'll make up my mind after a couple weeks of using this.

The quality is just crazy though. Maybe it's just the lenses I'm using, but the 24-105 on the 7DII vs 5D IV is night and day. Just shooting stupid stuff around my desk right now - keys, coffee cup full of pens, a flashlight, etc. and it's apparent. Sharp, no fuzziness even when viewed at 100%. I'm sold! I'm not typically a pixel peeper, but I can't resist!

Try shooting outside. The difference in quality should diminish. FF will always do better indoors in crappy lighting.
