To my recollection, you are not the original owner of the lens. Are you 100% sure the lens wasn't dropped by a previous owner? Sorry but I would have trust issues there even with all but the closest of friends. That might just be me though.

I can't imagine them caring how much you have spent with them...they probably hear that from everyone whether they've bought the lenses or not.

well, canon certainly cares enough to give me the same discount as CPS, worth a shot

It's not listed in my list a source it is used. I'm second owner. Was it dropped before?... no idea however I've owned it for over 3 years with over 15k photos taken with it all with OS engaged and several videos while using OS as well. Remember I haven't used it in a year except for one baseball game I took 600 images. It's seem a lot of use from me after the fact.

I'm not sure what the point is in fighting them on the "dropped" assessment, since the lens is out of warranty. The repair is $740, and it really doesn't matter how it happened.

If the lens was under warranty, you'd be debating the difference between $0 and $740. But since it isn't under warranty, you are debating the difference between $740 caused by your clumsiness and $740 caused by bad luck / poor durability. In the end, you could have drop kicked the lens down the stairs, and it's $740.

Probably... but this account of his experience is nudging me in the direction of sticking with Canon as much as possible, so there's that.

I should put up a disclaimer.

I've bought a lot of gear directly from Canon, and do have an account on their website so much of it can be verified. If I had to guess, about $5000+ in gear that can be tied to my canon account. Simply complain that the cost of repair is too expensive, they immediately offer like 30% discount. it's happened to me multiple times.

They told me the OS unit was $200 plus anything else might needed before. The only thing shown is the OS unit at 740. This is what I'm clarifying now.

And I'm pretty sure if I kicked the lens down the stairs it would be trashed. The weight of the lens alone it would of probably snapped in half at the front barrel screw connection. This would of meant junk basically due to entire body needing to be swapped.

Can you have them replace the OS unit only, and not deal with whatever the motor base barrel is?

I'm going to replace whatever that needs to be replaced. Just kinda stinks the pricing is all. We'll see what they come up with.

***Update***

I've filed a claim w/ the shipping service to get a refund of my money. The lens was indeed damaged during shipment literally. THey mentioned bent ring and I thought it was something inside dealing w/ the OS unit but apparently its the ring piece where the hood mounts got damaged. I bubble wrapped that lens 3-4 times and boxed it up good but evidently/somehow got damaged.

We exchanged emails back and forth and I also apologized for my firmness because I was thinking it was something inside not this:

I've sent payment and I'll get my lens repaired and will have it back in a week or so.

Edit: Also look like pending approval from the shipping service the lens should be covered 100% now.

Yes, very good that Sigma isn't as ishty as I thought they were, and good on you @Talley for filling us in instead of letting us assume Sigma was being ishty.

Talley I'm glad there's a logical explanation for what the Sigma technician told you, and that insurance will cover the repair cost. One thing still seems fishy: If the lens sustained that much damage, the box must have been in pretty bad shape when it was received. Yet nobody at Sigma thought to question the carrier, or to contact you about that. They just sent you a repair estimate assuming that was the way you sent it in.

Well ya. My second experience with sigma and it appears they throw a large bait out then wait for the complaint then they come back down. Either way it's getting fixed and I paid $240 and now the shipping company should pay me back.
