The 5D mk iii has sustained a high market resale value. I have resisted a "buy". What is this
site's opinion on the price point of a used 5d mk iii after the new 6d mk ii arrives....
Just a rhetorical question....I am just beginning to form a buy opinion and want either in near future.
Thanks for comments....and no negatives implied....I would love to have either...price being dominant.

One thing to remember about the pricing of the 5D Mark III is that one significant reason it held its value as much as it has after the release of the of the 5D4 is that many people are holding onto the older 5D3 as a backup camera.

The new 6D2 may be worth owning over the 5D3 but the difference in cost between what you can get for the 5D3 and would have to pay for a 6D2 may not be worth it to a pro using the camera as their backup. The other factor to consider, if the 6D2 has only one card slot, are the wedding guys going to trust one card enough to want to sell their old workhorse for the benefits of the newer camera.

All that to say, the 6D2 may effect the resale value of the 5D3 but probably not as much as one would normally expect.

I am pretty much in the same boat as you are. Am looking to upgrade my current bodies (currently I have 7D and T2i :)...). I have looked at the spec sheet for 5D4, 5D3 and 6D2. Based on what I shoot (mostly general stuff and some hockey for my son), it seems that the 6D2 is a pretty good upgrade IF you do not need a second card slot for back up. The reason for my leaning towards the 6D2 (if the speculation is accurate), is the fps (for hockey and it is the same as 5D4) and newer processor (hoping will provide cleaner file for high ISO). BUT am not going to be jumping to get the 6D2 right away... will wait to see what the real life review is :D

Waiting a bit will also have potential for street pricing/ green toe to knock $100 or so off.

for non paid amateurs, the 6D2, no question, over the 5D3

for paid pros, the 5D3, no question, over the 6D2

for people that are paid for events, using near identical cameras, a mix of 5D3/4s if you are a canon shooter, with 2 card slots, is a complete no brainer

for the price of the new 6D2, I would think that a used Sony A7Rii could almost be found for that price so I would seriously consider that camera (I own one) - unless you are an Astro shooter

Hockey and wedding photographer. Favourite camera / lens combos: a 1DX II with a Tamron 45 1.8 VC, an A7Rii with a Canon 24-70F2.8L II, and a 5DSR with a Tamron 85 1.8 VC. Every lens I own I strongly recommend [Canon (35Lii, 100L Macro, 24-70F2.8ii, 70-200F2.8ii, 100-400Lii), Tamron (45 1.8, 85 1.8), Sigma 24-105]. If there are better lenses out there let me know because I haven't found them.

Processor isn't used for noise reduction other than to produce a JPG file. If a processor is being used to reduce noise before the raw is written out, then Canon is "baking" their raw files, something up to this point we were happy they weren't doing unlike other manufacturers.

Professional hobbyist (I get paid for portrait and some commercial sessions) here but I have a full time career.. The lack of a back up card slot blows my mind.
I currently have the 6D and I use the wifi function to trigger the camera when light painting a vehicle and to upload images directly to social media when out in the field I couldnt imagine not having the wifi.
Is the 6D good enough for what I currently do, arguably yes. So I too, am confused as to what I want to do.
I do need a back up camera and I will probably pick up a 7d2 for back up and fast action stuff.
I'm not sure if I have the budget for a crop and the new 6d2.. I sure could save a bit by just sticking with my 6d and grabbing a 7d2 or 80d

Nothing personal here, really. :D

I find that kind of comment to be so lacking in substance I usually just tune it out. However, with the impending 6D release I have seen it more often, and expect to see it again and again this summer and into the fall, so ...

For 99.999 percent of my shooting, the 5D III would be a downgrade from my 6D, and I am a paid professional.

Some forget about this whole other genre of photography called commercial studio photography. Yes indeed, we still exist! I shoot all day and night without a card even in the camera.

Or, I shoot via wifi from my phone which is impossible out of the box with the 5D III.

So no, it is not that obvious of a decision.

Ditto...waiting. I do like the 5d mk iii only if the used price pressure point retreats while everyone
examines the 6D2...
And as you said, we need to wait for some real life reviews....patience.

at some point after the initial rush, the 6Dii will take a substantial price crash and rival the 5Diii price. If you're ok with the premium pricing, I'de go with the 6Dii. New sensor, pdaf, flippy screen would be enough to tilt the odds.

I like to upgrade my 6D but I prefer to wait and see the focusing test reviews on the 6D 2 , if it is as good as my 5d3 I would buy a gray market , otherwise I rather to buy used 5d3 or gray market 5d4 ($2750) than paying $2200 for 6D2

Have the 5diii and really like it. Tried a orig. 6D and totally hated it. Mainly do to the outer points being horrible at capturing moving animals. I also didnt like the 1/4000 limit on the shutter. To me that just made zero sense to cripple the camera like that for no reason.

The 6dII with the better AF and tilt/touch screen (loved that on my 70D) looks perfect. The thought of going without the joystick, dual cards and if they keep the stupid 1/4000 limit on the shutter might mean I keep the 5diii longer.

Will definitely be looking at the reviews when it comes out though.

Depends if you want new technology or old tech. ONly advantage of the 5D MKII would be a dual card slot.
