Not like $400 is pocket change, but at this price I feel like it's just better to spend it and go with the Canon. The safe bet. I was hoping the Sigma would be under the predicted price, but $1299 it is. Not bad, but close enough to the Canon to make me think.

But I forgot about the IS on the Sigma...that definitely brings it back into play. Someone review this ASAP :)

I've had the canon, I've owned the Tamron VC model, the 24-105's... I've owned a bit. The OS on the Sigma is the winner. And you bet your sweet butt when Canon does release a 24-70 IS version it'll be north of $2200-2400 which is the same as the Nikon version. SO you can't really compare.

What attracts me to the 24-70 2.8 OS is the ability to video. I always used my Tamron model w/ the 5D3 to video but I always had to manual focus. I'm not looking for great perfect wedding type video but to have a very good camera (top tier) and I can take great shots the instantly switch to video to capture the birthday candles moment is something that appeals to "me".

You don't really need IS/VC/OS on a lens like this nor do you need it on a UWA either but it does help. Sure you can handhold the 24-70 2.8 II at 1/15 at 24mm but can you do 1/2 second? In a pinch on vacation the ability to do this to help keep ISO down to a reasonable level and not have to have a tripod to some degree helps. Does this replace a tripod heck no... but stabilization has it's uses.

I bought the lens to review it, to see how it is. If it's a lens I think is quality it'll stay in my bag. I have a good lineup already and don't really need it but I want a general video/travel lens. The 16-35 F4 IS and 24-70 2.8 OS Art will be great for travel together for my needs of taking photos/video on one rig.

Indeed. Even wait for used copies and pick one up for 1000-1100ish. The VC tamron I sold it for 650. Doubt you'll get much better than that but I want the sigma for dock reasons and well I'm a sigma whore anyway. Not really but ya kinda. Funny how the Tamron G2 lens is being released the same time. I bet you have to wait for the Tamron to be available while the sigma is releasing small qty immediately and I bet it's to combat the Tamron.

seems like lens manufacturers are rushing things our sooner rather than later. Sony has that 12-24 and 100-400 out ahead of schedule, the 12-24 comes out next week in AUS, nearly a month ahead of schedule. I cant say for sure, but soon after release, you can probably shave 100 off the sigma price, with USA model, I saved even more with the sig 135, so I thought it would be worth a shot trying the native features with the MC-11 adapter. Eye focus + 135 would be a dream come true, and after shooting sony's 85, it clearly beat out canon's 135, so I want to keep the same sort of look for portraits. May not seem worthwhile, but I can only say whether it is or not after I try it

I would love to save a bundle and adapt the sigma 24-70 for video, but I seriously doubt it happens. The HSM motor would have to be silent, and from research of various Sigma lenses...... they produce noise

I've seen reviews where 3rd party lenses suffer from focus breathing. Do other Art lenses do?

They do. I have an external mic I throw on for this. I moved away from zooms and straight primes... Now I want the best of both again.

Either keep 120-300 or keep 200L but one or other needs to sell
1.4xIII for either of the long lenses

If I can't take good photos with that kit then I just need to give up and move to sony. As much as I would like to hold onto the 24A I simply do not use the 24 prime like I do any other lens. 24A and 24II canon combined it's not a popular lens for me. Plus I have to think about size of lenses in my bag as well since I dont' want to outgrow certain bags.

All lenses do. Go buy a cine lens if you don't want that.

I gave up on some zooms with the transition to sony, but I still have some. eventually, I'll have to decide whether to get a full on slow cine lens or get a trio of F2.8 zooms, which sets me back 6000 (maybe 3K out of pocket if I sell off gear it replaces). I think my heart will always have space for a 35/50/85/135 prime. Even though the spread is so close, I really really enjoy those lenses, and it's been nearly two years for my current 35 and 50, and still enjoying them like they're new purchases. I've owned the 24-70ii for a little longer, and one even crapped out on me, but there's a sense of security that comes with having something like that. I'll hardly ever use it (in fact the slower 24-240 has had a ton more usage) but it's the ultimate point and shoot I can just go off somewhere and not have to worry about lens changes. I can take it to the beach and get satisfactory portraits, landscapes, night, and/or action shots. With a 70-200 f2.8, I can do video from just about any venue, or have someone do video duties while I shoot photos.

I'll have to do some soul searching next year when my kids are in dance again, as video behaves quite a bit differently than photos.... do I need that extra stop? I'm hoping I dont, but at the same time, I'm not going to kid myself. Another goal is to get away from the external Mic when possible, I do a TON of casual videos, and no way am I carrying a mic around, no way. For planned dance where the music is really good, sure, I'll bring it out for then, but that's like 1% of video I shoot. Right now, I shoot video with all FBW lenses, absolutely silent, and the focus is spectacular, moves in a controlled manner like focus racking, not fast movements, like cinema. Hopefully sigma can start going in that direction.
