This is just a scouting photo to find the best vantage point for an image I've had in my head for about 7 years.
I drive into Boston from the north and each day, around sunrise, I see this wind turbine and power plant to the east from the "upper deck" of I-93. What you can't see in this photo is the airport a few miles "behind" the power plant and the sun rising over the harbor beyond that. It's quite a striking image - but it's only in my head. This shot was taken from the top floor of a new parking garage across the river from the plant.
The power plant is the Mystic Generating Station, a gas-fired 2,000 megawatt plant that is the largest in New England. Strangely, it is not on the gas pipeline network and is supplied solely by LNG. The 1.5 megawatt wind turbine is HUGE with a maximum height of 364 feet at the blade peak but doesn't generate power for the grid directly. The turbine is owned by the Massachusetts Water Resource Authority (the water utility) and runs a large pumping station.
After I retire at the end of the year, I'll be able to spend more time to find the perfect vantage point (unfortunately I can't stop my car on the highway and set up my tripod!). C&C always welcome.
Fuji X-T10 with 18-55mm at 35.8mm - f7.1 - 1/500 - ISO 400. SOOC JPG with minor LR processing.
