How are you transporting your cables and cords on location?

For over a decade, the core of my lighting kit has traveled around in a LowePro ProRoller 3. I've finally reached the point where I've bought enough heads that the case is too heavy to lift safely into the car and I want to split the contents to reduce the weight. There's 5 long power cords, 100' of 12/3 extension cord, and a couple of heavy duty power strips that ride in the zip pockets of the ProRoller that I think now belong in something else. However, I'm having trouble finding that elusive "something else". I haven't managed to find anything actually designed for transporting large extension cords. The closest I've come is a wreath bag, which is definitely large enough, but I'm afraid none of them will be constructed heavily enough to survive being stuffed full of copper.

How are you guys getting your power cords and extension cords organized and hauled around on location?

Not necessarily organized.. But a Igloo roller cooler keeps 2x 100ft 10/3 cords, 3xSpeedotron heads and cords, and wal-mart powerstrip in check.. Plus it works as a chair.

With the Godox lineup of battery powered devices what is the need for cords? with options up to 1200w does anyone need more than that?

I do not think the OP wants to dump a decade's worth of good equipment. Maybe he has shoots that has more than 200 full power exposures. With my pack/head setup, I can shoot arenas with two heads per pack to get a faster duration of about 1/2000 at 1200ws per head and I can shoot it all day long.

Head over to HomeDepot. They've got medium and large size wheeled boxes I use to cart gear on location.

Since it's not a photo store, they are much less expensive. Look around there or Lowes.

For my lights - I get kaizen foam sheets from Amazon to line the bottom.

Exactly. These are great and stackable. I know some of the cheetahstand guys use these as their main boxes.

Can you provide a link to or picture of what you're talking about? I haven't seen anything like that at my local HD, but due to the economics of the area and the extreme amount of theft, there's a lot of products that place doesn't stock.

I didn't see mine on the first page. Quite large. I also have smaller ones. They're in the tool section.

Thanks for the link. As soon as I told it which store is local to me, all the items disappeared except the really tiny, traditional toolbox type ones. I'd have to order it in.

I ordered a cymbal bag off amazon today after a reviewer commented that she hauls around a 22" cast iron griddle in it. If it's strong enough for that, it should survive cables.

Without digging my stuff out the closet to check (not sure which size it is without measuring) I literally have 2 of these Husky boxes to hold my two packs, 4 heads, and all cables. I do remember it was $55 each though. Cheaper than a Tenba, not nearly as pretty, but they do the job.

Oh wow, that's pretty big. Do you know what yours weighs when loaded?

Fully loaded it's heavy as all heck lol. But that's because of the pack/heads I went with. Usually I just travel with one pack (2403cx) and 2-3heads (202vf); IIRC the pack weighs ~30lbs and each head ~9lbs. The 1203cx I have weighs maybe 1/2-2/3s the big pack. So anywhere from ~30-60lbs depending on which setup I bring and how many heads. Love the Speedos for being so cheap, but hate the weight most days. It's not too bad though, as the wheels work great and are big enough to get over decent sized bumps no problem. It's a bit tough on the back when getting it in/out of the back of my suv, but after that I don't have any complaints. Much better than the days when I had to carry the pack in one hand, and all the heads and cables in a tote bag lol

All my long cords go in a plastic crate, coiled and tied with velcro. All other gear goes in hard or soft cases depending on method of transport.

That is what I moved to. I have a large roller case with a big strobe and cords, etc. but now I have 2 TLL flash units, 2 AD360s, all cords, diffusers, transmitter, batteries, PB960 strobe batteries, accessories and brackets all fitting into a Pelican 1510 case. It is packed very tightly but fits.

So 2 camera flashes and 2 strobes, and all the power cords and power needed in a smaller roller, about 1/2 the size of my corded strobe case. With where Godox is going and others are sure to follow, the older large battery packs and cords are going to continually depreciate. If I had the older style setups, I would sell while I could, while going to a much more travel friendly setup wth no cords to get into the way and faster setup, personally. However it is perfectly acceptable to keep using the heavier corded equipment.

So per the OP, how many cables/cords are we talking about? Could a fewf Pelican 1510 boxes hold them? If so, you can get these for $80 each if you watch for the deal over in the marketplace through Newegg.

Monoprice has competing hard cases too.
