The boy is a little too contrasty.
With such extremely bright sun, it is necessary to take steps to reduce the contrast.

I am thinking this is a scan from B&W film - I could be wrong.

In general, scanning of film raises the contrast even higher than would obtain from a contact print, so when processing film to be scanned it is better to start with a lower contrast image.
