Canon EOS Rebel SL2

Wow so far this camera is pretty nice indeed. At ISO 1600 indoors (f2.8 on the lens) with some faint window light I can still get some pretty good, not overly grainy images even after bumping it in LR. 2 bars of noise reduction in camera and a touch more in LR does the trick but this is something my OMD could have never done.

using a 50mm f1.2
right now outdoors is an overcast day, im indoors, some diffused window light, no inside lights on

So far some notes.
-wishing the screen can tilt without having to flip it out (like sony, olympus, and others).
-back button focus setting is annoying as its all the way out to the edge via the AE lock button as cyberdyne stated. Switching the button with the focus select button helps a bit
-have to get used to changing the aperture with a 2 button press instead of a jog wheel. i havent done this since my 1st gen rebel days!
-focusing in my current condition the camera focuses confidently and quick. Chasing my 2 yr old is no sweat.
-ergonomics are right! I have M to L sized skinny hands. Theres something about a good sized SLR that a X100T can never do. Size is so small on this thing and I can see that if i get a pancake lens, this thing could easily fit in a large pocket.

very impressed so far. This coming from a religious full frame 5D user (5Dc to 5DII to 5DIII). i havent used a apsc camera since my 30D days and before that, the original rebel

Yes there are some Rebel ergonomics that are hard to deal with, definitely. Same with the SL1. The new sensor is quite nice, for those bodies that Canon put it into in the past few years.

The gap at low ISO between the SL2 and 6D2, for example, is a surprising one these days than just 5+ years ago.

also note for those using LR 4.4 like me, these raws from this camera wont work. Good thing I also have LR CC

And yup, ISO performance is pretty good. Was in a different room (hospital visiting someone), dimly lit, some dusk light from large windows coming in, shooting at f2.8 (using my 16-35mk3) and the camera still produced some nice results.

Was video one of your criteria??

A large part of the nice IQ is due to the 16-35mk3 lens your using with that crop sensor. That combo is still quite bulky using L glass.

Have you tried the older 6d? In your latest "test" in the hospital room the 6D would have performed that task with ease with little effort compared to a crop sensor. This is where i would say without a doubt would produce much nicer IQ than the latest Canon APS-C sensors. The 6D not a very big camera yet it's still light and comfortable to use. Since your using native mirrored glass the difference in weight is just the body. I would compromise tad more weight for much better low light iso performance.

I believe the Fuji 24mp system is still cleaner at high iso buy due to the mirrorless setup it's generally a lot lighter than an SL2.

The older full frame sensor in the 6D still in my books provides incredible IQ over the latest Canon crop sensor offerings. Native killer 24mm f/1.4 prime is also one reason the Full frame is appealing. One of my main reasons for using Fuji is because I love the 24mm FOV of their native glass 16mm f/1.4. Perhaps not your concern buy my only major disappointment in Canon EF-S crop world is a lack of a 24mm FOV prime lens that is fast.

Can't recall if you've tested the Fuji system too? The 16mm provides me IQ almost like using a 24Lmk1 and
the 56mm provides me "almost" very close image quality of my 85Lmk2. 10-24mm UWA is not like a 16-35mk3 but better optics than a 17-40L or a stopped down 16-35 f/2.8mk2 @ f/4. Only difference is serious weight loss over mirrored native glass.

I guess if you print .....it all looks good!

The sl model line are very small camera, smaller than some of Canons bridge cameras. Also the 80d has better DR than the 6d, has a touch screen and tilt screen, and a few other goodies at half the price of a lightly used 6d.

i dont plan on using any L glass with this SL2. Mainly only the 24mm EFS and the 40mm. 24mm is too wide for me. 35mm is my limit (FF). And maybe ill get a 50 STM so i dont have to carry the f1.2L. I could get into why i have a 16-35 but thats another story but to be brief, i really only shoot FF at 35 with that thing, the ultra wide is in rare occasions when i need it. The SL2 with the 16-35 is indeed very bulky.

I do plan to "downgrade" (or is it an upgrade!) my 5D3s to 6D2s in the future. Unless some other competitor changes the game and makes me wanna switch.

Please test out a 35 f/2IS prime for your SL2 you get. The optics on that prime is excellent and it's lightweight too!! That'll be like a 56mm FOV prime.

To my pleasant surprise the IQ was quite amazing as I was thinking of how the canon crops looked in my 50d body. I do quite like my 80D optics but if I really had to be nit picky i'd still appreciate a full frame more as far as IQ. The Fuji has been a total shock in how good the images look that are less digital looking than my 5d2/5d3.

ive heard many good things about the look of fuji digital pics. One day...

35...that reminds me, canon does make a 24 IS also. maybe ill opt for a 24 IS too instead of the EFs version. Both lenses are small enough anyways. That way i can use it for my FF cams too. This is getting expensive already lol.

Heck if im going to get a 24mm and a 35mm why dont i just splunk for a fuji X100T then LOL??

After all this talk and hype, i ended up going with a X100T instead (embarrassing LOL). I think price was the major deciding factor then came size. Until the SL2 drops to $200 on the used market then maybe ill reconsider as it would be nice to have 1 system and a good cheap apsc camera in my mix at some point.

SL2 would be $550 + a 24IS would be $400 used = almost $1k vs a used fuji hangs around $700 or less in a smaller overall package for travel. Plus it would be nice to experience the fuji system a bit too.

Have fun with the Fuji. Another very popular small combo is simply getting a Fuji interchangeable body with 18-55 kit lens. Picking up a mint used xt10 with 18-55 is incredibly affordable. You can produce incredible images with that combo with that virtually pro grade Kit lens. Later you could always buy a 27 mm pancake lens .

For now you'll get a great taste of Fuji files and built in ND filters.

i think the flip out screen would be a major selling point for me on the xt10 alone. ill see how this x100t goes first. i wish fuji would put on some larger grips on their cameras!

I just ordered an SL2 from B&H (ordered from Adorama, but this morning it showed backordered, where yesterday when I ordered, they had stock). Let's see what I can do with it at high ISO and compare to the 7D2!

I sold the SXHS60 I bought earlier in the year, the kids weren't into it, and I just couldn't make it do things I wanted it to do. It had CRAZY reach though.

So back to the baby rebel, I liked the SL1 when I had a few, so this should be great.
