Often even people with some coding experience will hire someone who specializes in app development. Many mobile app platforms now utilize HTML5, CSS3, and Javascript (which can be used cross platform in web pages and within app shells). I'd highly recommend learning HTML5 and CSS3 if you're going to be getting into interface design. Nowadays, you start with a wireframe, then design in HTML/CSS (and either use the GUI in Dreamweaver or hand code using just a text editor). Balsamiq is a popular wire frame software (that has a desktop app or web version). Nowadays, Photoshop is only used for creating button graphics, editing photographs, or creating specific effects for interfaces. Back when table layouts were more prevalent with HTML, Photoshop was used more for full page layouts (and then you'd "slice" areas which were exported as an image sequence with a HTML with table). You'd also use Photoshop to create rastor graphics of gradients, rounded corners, or drop shadows. Hardly anyone does that anymore since CSS3 is more efficient (and can render those effects natively). Canon 5D mk IV

Yes Xd is probably the tool you want to be using, at least from the Adobe stable. It is only a preview/beta product at the moment though, and as such a little light on tutorials.
