I was reading somewhere online a few days ago about the best type of filters. I though it said something about getting one made of a certain type of glass. I think it had white in the name but am not sure. Does anyone know?

Found it.

Water-white schott glass. Is this considered a good glass for filters?

It's good glass.

Not the best.

Depends on the application.

There's more to filters than the glass. Coatings matter too.

What application are you looking for?

Very best,

Looking to get a circular polarizer and 10 stop ND. Both in the 77mm circular size and I'll be getting a 77-67mm step down ring.

They'll be used for landscape photography. I thought about going the square design and getting a grad ND but I'll just apply that in LR if I need it to try and keep the cost down as much as possible.

If you want very good quality and a lower price, look to a 10 stop Haida ND filter. Very little color cast, good quality glass. Can't distinguish it from more expensive filters, they're that good. And for the CPL, look to a Marumi Super, they're excellent.

If you want very good quality and a higher price, take a look at BreakThrough Photography's stuff, they're new, but they're quite good (and pricey).

Good idea avoiding the square plates; you can do it without graduated NDs these days, which is a lot less stuff to carry, scratch, break, etc. Blending more than one exposure and using gradients in post-processing is a simple process these days. I sold all my square filters and only use a single 10 stop and CPL myself too.

Very best,

Go with known brands and non-virtual store. If in USA the BH is awesome. Real store with great on-line store. They have better prices what unknown sellers eBay. And free shipping over 100$.

B+W, Heliopan for trusted high quality manufacturers. Kenko, Hoya, Marumi for cost effectiveness.

If for some reason you will find it difficult to get ND 10 filter, check Polaroid vND filter. It is larger on the front, no hood attachable. But price is good :)

I just ordered a B+W 10 stop ND from B&H along with a 77-67 step ring. I will order the circular polarizer the next time I place an order.
