Just curious...why does the new Tamron suck? Or is this just an attempt at some humor?

I said all 24-70 suck not tamron. it's a dry humor stab... they don't suck... they just don't perform like the really awesome primes do. but thats a DURRRR of course type of comment.

The original VC was very quiet as well.

Yes it was. This G2 lens is quieter, has a more modern design, better lens coatings and 5 stops of stabilization. IMO it is optically at least equivalent to if not superior to both the original Tamron G1 AND the Canon 24-70 f/2.8 v2. Both excellent lenses.

doubtful. optics never changed just some coatings. This won't bring out mega sharpness. One plus is the Tamron always had pleasing bokeh imho. The warm colors is something I'd have to get over going back to if I went G2.

I just picked up a 16-35 2.8 III so now I'm debating if I really need a 24-70x zoom when a 16-35/50A combo is a bit more versatile for me for travel.

According to Tamron the optics were "refined" and new coatings can effect IQ. Not so sure what you're saying "doubtful" to.

Exact same optics. Same mtf charts. Same groups. Same optics.

Refined everything else. New coatings is their way to say refined.

Interesting...do you have links?

Roger from LensRentals and The Digital Picture both want to retest to see possible IQ changes including possible improved variance among the MTF charts. Tamron apparently says says the elements are improved over the original but the big improvements are in the overall design, AF, IS, lens coatings, and quietness. Even if IQ is not changed it was already superb.

I'm interested in how quiet it will be because USM lenses are generally quiet, but when it comes to video, it's too noisy. I'de probably use the lens exclusively for video and event style shooting with a flash involved.

Found this on YT, it looks like the tamron is a winner for video, 6 minutes in.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yPEmVKoLHwE (external link)

seems very quiet compared to the canon 24-70ii 9 minutes in.

I'll pickup the tamron when it drops to 800 or sony's GM if it drops to 1500.....

whatever gets there first.
