Sounds like you may have also gotten a poor copy. Especially if the OS is not even functioning. Swapping out for another, or just outright moving to the Tamron?

I'm still waiting around to see where all these go as the 24-70 wars are in full swing finally. I'm waiting to see how low the original Tamron 24-70 VC gets and how the Canon 24-70 F4L IS gets along. Like a few others, I don't care about F2.8 on a zoom that is this wide, as I most likely would rather stop down a stop regardless as I tend to use wider lenses like this for capturing the environment (I don't understand trying to get shallow depth of field with a standard zoom), so I'd rather have functional image stabilization. I'm mostly leaning towards the 24-70 F4L IS for the weight. But's interesting to see what the Sigma ART & Tamron G2 do to the market.

Very best,

Generally unimpressed. IQ was quite good. Focus was along the lines of the 50II, changed in every different type of light (lens was used, maybe that is why it was sold, or defective). Too big, too heavy, too slow. Zooms (to me) are for convenience. I prefer my 24-105 STM for zooming. If I need aperture, I'll mount a prime. I don't get the fascination with f/2.8 zooms. That's my thing, though.

Well it depends on what you're shooting. I like mine for my wife's triathlons, where I'm shooting a number of people moving quite quickly, and I'd rather have more light for the AF and more points available.

Given my druthers, of course, primes are better.

I love a like, but feedback (including CC) is even better!

Thanks for the unbiased feedback. From this one report, I feel better about waiting on this one...we'll see what others say.

They finally updated the weight on their webpage: 1020g vs 805g on the Canon (almost a half pound difference)! That's pretty substantial when you're dealing with an already heavy lens. In this case, it sounds like the weight can't even be justified with the OS. Unless of course you got a defect.

After further testing this morning I've concluded the OS in this lens just simply doesn't work. Looking through viewfinder or video switching it on or off makes no difference. Yes you hear it engage when you flip the switch on but it makes no difference at all

none.

Does this lens have different modes for OS? The new Tamron 70-200/2.8 G2 has a mode 3 where the viewfinder is not stabilized at all and the VC doesn't work until the shutter is pushed all the way. Are you sure you just are not in the wrong mode? I don't see any images on line of the selector switches on this lens and can't find a manual yet either.

There is an OS on off switch this is all. There is no option in the dock menu to adjust from standard to dynamic etc. No OS options at all within the dock (at this time).

Bummer I thought maybe it was an easy operator error thing. Do you notice a difference in camera shake in the actual images like say you shot at 70mm and 1/80" and then at 1/10"?

Yes big difference. I can normally handhold a 24-70 to about 1/20 as it is and get good results. The difference is there is no difference. The OS acts like maybe 1/2 stop or so but it aint much. I can pop off 1/10 at 70mm and it does seem to make some difference but not like the VC would let me get almost 1/2 second shots consistently.

Are you thinking you just got a bum lens then and going to return it for a second copy? Even my aging 17-50 has a good OS system. I can't imagine this is normal for a new art series lens.

It's gotta be a "bum" lens

I'll play around more w/ the IQ size of it tonight. So far the IQ is outstanding in the center. It's the extreme corners that lack wide open. I need to borrow my friends mk2 and compare better.

I'm still impressed with the AF speed on this lens. So far it's the fastest ART I've encountered.

That's... counter-climactic  I was looking forward to the Sigma 24-70 ART. Thanks for the impressions Talley, and sorry it didn't work for you. I thought I could 'hear' how upset and disappointed you were in your post.

Suddenly my Tamron 28-75 f/2.8 for $140 seems like a killer deal.

That lens is awfully brutal.

I bet this lens gives the mk2 a run for it's money but the OS needs to work better... or work at all.

when you say mk2 do you mean canon 24-70L II? if so I think you just verified you are crazy :-P anyone looking for optical improvement over that lens is on a pursuit of insanity, and just look at the price and size of the sigma. I think there's a stronger possibility that sigma laid another egg :p

That lens doesn't have a firmware update yet because it is so new. However, the dock has a firmware update (April 2017) and the software to operate the dock also has an update. You might want to make sure you are as current as possible with both.

At the price paid, I personally would return the lens just on the basis of the lint you mention and op for anew copy.

I found this comment from the manual interesting. Not sure if I have to do this with my Canon lineup.

Already did all of that and know of the OS issue which is why I turn the camera off before I take a sigma lens off
