Sigma 24-70 2.8 OS Art Initial Impressions

when you say mk2 do you mean canon 24-70L II? if so I think you just verified you are crazy anyone looking for optical improvement over that lens is on a pursuit of insanity, and just look at the price and size of the sigma. I think there's a stronger possibility that sigma laid another egg

Talley went to NYC, visited B&H, and bought nothing. He even posted a photo of the nothing he bought! I think that qualifies him as certifiably, and completely, insane.

Also what sold me on the mkII was the color contrast. The overall characteristics of the mkII is great, and it seems well suited to be paired with new higher MP cameras.

yep canon's plan has finally come together. the best glass and competitive sensors.

Some adjustments to my grip and stance and redid alot of tests at 1/10 70mm with OS on and then OFF the OS does work and I get good improvement with OS enabled. Did a bunch at 1/5 at 70mm and same thing I get more shake w/ OS off and with OS on I get sharp images.

But I have to remain very still in the process no matter on or off and those are my results. It appears the OS does in fact work but it doesn't lock the viewfinder like I'm use to.

One plus is somehow all of the internal lens corrections are available for this lens so for video all the distortion/vignetting is all corrected.

Also at F4 this thing is crazy sharp deep into corners where the corners are only slightly behind. at 2.8 the corners mimic the output of the 17-40... pretty good up until the extreme tip then blah.

I sent Sigma an email asking if they would allow dynamic OS be enabled via dock anytime soon. We'll see what they say. The color/bokeh is great on this lens and the AF speed is still very impressive... blows out the 24/35/50 for sure.

being able to adjust the OS with the dock doesn't effect the actual stability of the lens...if it's 4 stops, it's 4 stops regardless...it just changes the way it spools up...either quick and noticeable, or a slower start up...either way basing lens reviews off of a couple hours and some shots of a brick wall seem like a poor way to review...unless you're into shots of brick walls...i'm not

the sigma has the same number of aperture blades as the MKII L...so wouldn't the star points be similar? i mean at least same number wise...if you want star quality i think the sigma 14f1.8 with 9 aperture blades would be better than the 14LII with it's paltry 6

while same amount of points, but quality will be different. Some lenses have curved blades, generally not as pointy as straight cut blades. Some lenses have optimal stars like the canon 16-35 f2.8 ii and voigtlanders, those lenses only need to be stopped down to F8 for streaky stars.

14L II is an old lens that's crying for a refresh. it's also a lens I don't own. i'd have to see the sigma stars. i know a lot of photographers who shoot canon but none that use sigma lenses. maybe you could post a sample?

here's a 14L II star from when i did own the lens. not too terrible and bigger than the 18-point stars.....

the 16-35L II does make some great stars. i owned that lens for many years.

Compared to the stars in your previous bridge shot, this one quite sucks !

Ok man really?

I did disclaimer 1.5hrs w/ the lens. This was NOT a review. This was initial impression by me... with enough experience with enough lenses to base an "initial impression". The brick shots was just to post the distortion which I have a concern over and feel it's pretty substantial but again I'm more of a prime guy and I'm use to the Art's little to none.

Lens review this was not... I've taken over 200 shots w/ this lens now and I do a pretty typical run down on all my lenses to test them. Have you not remembered my lens reviews prior? Many many photos and comparisons... I've done a 20min video of the 5D4 menu.

I spent more time with the lens last night and concluded the OS is working but it's just not locking the viewfinder like other lenses do... it's not effective for video period. Unless lens is faulty it's not going to meet my needs for video.

It's pretty darn easy for you to pop off something stupid like that to me isn't it... again I ask you at what point did I call this any kind of lens review??? At what point am I not allowed to give my initial impressions??? At what point will you buy the darn lens to offer any input of your own???

I think you and many others should know me by now that I'm not just throwing poor words around. We all know I'm a gear junky and that I also own/demand the best. This lens can be that if the stupid OS worked like "I'm use to".

Nope... I've been busy. I'm away at work from 5am-6pm 6-7 days a week right now and that only leaves me a few hours each night. I've managed to take care of alot of needed things around the house and take some images as well.

I'll get around to it later
