Most focus points only work for LENSES that are F5.6 or faster.

Take the 100-400 F5.6, if you stick a 1.4 ext on it, then you have a 140-560 F8.
600 F4 with 2x ext , 1200 F8.

Unless you have a pro body, or one of the newer model prosumers, then you would have NO auto focus on the above combo.
Person you referred to had a 50D and a 20D, so not an option.

Hope this makes sense.

I have 3 three. Two 5D3s and a 50D. My images aren't even that good. Been thinking about downsizing.

Taking photos with a fancy camera does not make me a photographer.

Most professionals I know tend to not really collect gear or keep stuff that they're not really using or expect to use again - Old gear sitting on a shelf is capital that could be better used, so if you drop the coin on an upgrade to the latest and greatest digital, then it is usually better to try and offload the previous gear you were using to offset the latest purchase.

(Pretty much all the serious professionals I have had dealings with own 2-3 cameras of the same model, and share the same mind set that I do: It is better to have interchangeable cameras that function the same and are all actively used regularly rather than an older less capable camera sitting gathering dust in a bag as a 'backup' where you might forget to even bother charging the battery.)

I am very much not a professional photographer, but have given some serious thought to possibly transitioning into the field. I work in software and tech consulting, and camera gear comes by way of my personal entertainment budget rather than investment in my livelihood at this point. As such, I upgraded to a 7D when I was photographing amateur sports for some friends, and then bought a second 7D to pair with it because I was using mostly primes and travelling to tournaments and stuff and wanted a second camera in case something broke on one. Figured it would rather suck to have shelled out a few hundred for travel/hotel/meals on a trip, aka a good chunk of the cost of a second body, and then potentially find myself without a working camera... So it made sense.

Beyond the pair of 7D bodies I have since added a medium format film and a large format film press camera. Why? Because I can afford more toys to play with now and then.
