7D MARK III

If one shoots high DR low ISO shots often and have to push shadows, then i can see the 80d taking precedence over the 7d2, otherwise I don't, sensor wise. I hope the 7d3 has the same low ISO performance of the 80d but the high ISO of the 7d2, or better, but the 6d2 release has me leveling my expectations.

Are you saying that the 7DII has better high ISO? I certainly respect your opinion if so, but I was thinking that they are very similar with a slight edge to the 80D (based on DXOmark).

I chose the 80D for the 20% more pixels (helps a little with wildlife and when I'm shooting the International Space Station), better DR (not that important in what I mostly shoot but nice to have), and the flip screen. The flip screen is great in some situations, like when I'm shooting Solar stuff. I don't have to get on my knees to use the live screen to focus. Another example is low angle shots.

In getting these features, I realized that I was giving up a more advanced focus system (more advanced than I'm used to), and the greater frames per second. The lower fps DOES bother me. I realize that 7fps is no slouch, but when I'm shooting bears in Yellowstone, I must admit that I'm jealous of the machine gun fire coming from the photographers next to me.

I also like, and use, the wifi availability.

I may be naive given Canon's knack for p!$$ing off their most loyal customers, but I don't think the situation with the 7Diii is/will be the same as the 6Dii. The 7D is the high-end flagship crop sensor body, whereas the 6D is the entry level full frame body. While there is definitely some technological backtracking between the 6D and the 6Dii, a lot of the disappointment I read was from people who wanted the 6Dii to be a $2000 5D Mark V.

The more interesting differentiation, IMO, will be between the 7Diii and the 90D that is rumored to launch at about the same time. Canon will need to give 80D owners a compelling reason to upgrade to the 90D, but they will also need to make it clear that the 7Diii is the top of the line so it doesn't lose sales to the 90D.

I don't know how much attention Canon pays to competitors specs, but I was looking at Nikon's crop sensor flagship, the D500, a while back. Superficially, it's pretty impressive, as I mentioned in the other 7Diii thread: 10 FPS, 4K video, 153 AF points (99 cross type and 15 that support f/8), tilting touch screen, WiFi, Bluetooth, NFC... I hope Canon sets their sites on besting this!

I feel like they'll introduce the 90D like six months before the 7DIII...It's usually what happens to me when i want to upgrade, and i jump on the new crop, only to wish i had held out a bit longer for the latest 7D

I'm thinking I might hold out for the 7D3 and see what Canon has to offer. I won't be a first adopter this time. The 7D line is Canon's top crop yet it does not focus like 1DX. Canon just won't put the top AF in it.

The thing the 80D is it has a newer geared shutter mechanism I imagine that prevents any bounce. the 7D2 has one but it is different. Not sure if it can handle 10 FPS.

Like I said I don't struggle with my 7D2 bit it does miss from time to time. Most of the time I can track that to something I did but then there are the other times that can't be explained.

Maybe I should not post this but everyone did laugh this off at first.

I have an occasional miss with sports on the 7D2, but I did as well with the 1D3 and 1D4 too. However most of the time, it is locked on and stays with the players I am tracking, and it feels like a 1D in many ways. However, sure, they are not going to configure the AF either with settings or processors as they do in the 1D series.

Yes. It is very good at locking on and tracking. TS at a lower setting works as advertised. I've never owned a D series so that is good info. I don't know how valid that video is and what he compares it to. Like I said not an issue for me but I'll always take an improvement.

I will be interested to see if the new sensor technology thats in the 5D4 and 1Dx2 will make it to the 7D3

Still not overly impressed with ISO dark and shadows on the 7D2

Not really fair comparing those two cameras. One is a FF bleeding edge technology camera and the other a 3 year old crop camera.

Either the 5DIV or the 5DsR depending on the feature set you want to compare. The 5DIV competes better but still the newer Nikon 850 pretty much tops everything except for the dual pixel focusing and size and weight. Oh, and built in GPS.

Never mind the 5D4, the 77D and Rebel T7i have Wifi, NFC, and Bluetooth. As the flagship crop body, I would think the 7D3 would have to match those.

there's no telling what canon will do...the 70D had wifi before the 7DIII came out...

if it's got wifi, and a swivel screen i'll buy it as my next camera probably...if it doesn't i'll probably stick with the XXD series...the hard part is going to be that the 90D or whatever it's called will be a pretty great spec camera...my 70D will be even longer in the tooth then...and i'll be tempted to just get that...but this time i'm going to convince myself to wait till a 7DIII is announced...even though i hate waiting for non existent cameras
