Equipped with new NANO USM technology combining Ring USM and STM for smooth and near-silent video and high-speed AF for still capture.
Fast and incredibly quiet, the EF-S 18-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS USM's NANO USM AF system not only delivers high speed AF, but also makes quiet, fast and smooth AF transitions that can be ideal for movie recording. Combining ring USM and STM (lead-screw type) features, the diminutive chip-shaped ultrasonic motor is engineered to help deliver high-speed, smooth, precise and near-silent operation, plus full time manual focus (when using one-shot AF).
Improved AF speeds up to 4.3x (Tele) and 2.5x (Wide) for faster autofocus.
Thanks to its new NANO USM motor, the Canon EF-S 18-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS USM focuses incredibly fast - a clear advantage for action photography and for working on the fly.

The other half recently replaced her EOS 450D setup with an EOS 80D + EF-S 18-135mm f/4-5.6 IS USM Nano. Must say I'm impressed. Nice camera, with more f/8 focus points than my 7DII and wifi (though I much prefer to use the 7DII). The new 18-135mm is a bit of a jewel. Very fast focusing, good IS and from what I've seen so far, pretty good at delivering results. She borrowed an EF-S 55-250mm to take on holiday and that performed very well too.

Last week, we ordered a new EF 70-300mm f/4-5.6 IS USM II (£85 off from Clifton Cameras plus £85 cash back from Canon!), which arrived yesterday.

I have no photos to share yet, but so far I think it's very good. Focusing is almost instantaneous and silent, image stabilisation is effective. It feels pretty solid, the controls are nicely weighted, the front element does not rotate as focusing is internal and the image sharpness and contrast seem to be right up there. Crazy that the lens hood is an additional £80 from Canon.

A few shots of greeting cards in the living room last night suggest it holds its own against my 100-400mm II, especially at the price point. It is not of course as robust, not weatherproof and a bit shorter reach. Looking forward to having a bit more of a play to see just how good it really is.

Hi,

I received this lens from ebay yesterday.
AF is incredibly fast and accurate! IQ seems excellent, but I haven't tried it outside.

I'm having a problem with it, though, that I would like you to elucidate me: the zoom ring (or the lens extending barrel) is not very smooth. It makes a bit of noise (like something scratching - more between 135-200, maybe) and is a bit stiff.
I thought my Tamron 70-300 VC was stiff, but now, comparing it to the Canon, it sure feels "lighter". :)

Maybe I'm being a bit pity, I now, this is not a 70-200 L, but I haven't read anything about this in the reviews.
Do you also feel this with your lens?

Thanks,
Luis

There's no reason to buy Canon lens hoods, JJC Hoods on Amazon are an exact replacement at a fraction of the price. The JJC 74B hood has the push button release and is reversible just like the Canon hood.

Mine has no scratching or noise when zooming, I would take a look at the hidden portion of the lens and see if there's scratches suggesting some kind of abrasive debris is stuck inside the zoom assembly. My zoom is very smooth.

No issues with the zoom on the one we have.

As for the hood, yes considering the JJC version for a fraction of the cost of a Canon one.

Just to add: I also have a 17-40 and 24-105 L lenses. Their zoom ring is way smoother and "less heavy" than the 70-300 II.
I'm not sure if I should compare them, but the difference is too big to ignore, I feel...

Maybe my copy is not as it should.

Doesn't sound right to me. I'd consider sending it back and getting another if possible.
Good Luck.

Doesn’t seem like we have a dedicated image thread for this lens so I’ll post here. Just completed my first vacation with this lens and I really like it. It is definitely better than the original version except built quality. It has the best video IS I’ve ever seen on any lens, let alone telephoto zoom. Much better than L version and quiet. For photos, I learned that it takes a couple of seconds to fully engage IS.

I sold mine too and moved to 85L 1.2 ii. I like and use it much more - way more versatile, shooting against bright light is much better, much better shutter speed, low light, studio, headshots & environmental portraits, video, etc. I was interested in the new 85L IS but so far all the images I’ve seen do not have the superb rendering of 85L 1.2 (king of color and bokeh). Never considered Sigma, not practical - too big and heavy and rendering is totally different.
