I got so used to doing tabletop macro tethered to an Android tablet, that I never learned some of the things you can do handheld with the T4i.

Well you can try "capturing" the spider and find a way to get it into your tabletop setup

I suppose, but he's less likely to move around in his natural environment, plus I don't have to deal with issue of reflection if he's in some kind of plastic enclosure.

large dish with water, place something (like a piece of wood) in the middle that surfaces outside the water but still surrounded by it, put spider there. wait a couple of minutes and let it explore the area, it will eventually stop moving once it figures there are no threats or a place to hide. Shoot away. Once your done, pick up the object and release the spider where you found it.

PS: that being said, I also prefer to shoot them in their natural environment
