The device is a NEEWER Vertical Battery Grip, attached to a Canon Digital Rebel T5 DSLR. The grip connects to the base of the camera using a plastic wheel that appears to be geared to a metal screw which goes into the base of the camera. The gear drive has broken, and turning the wheel no longer turns the metal screw. There are no obvious ways to open the Neewer grip to get access to the screw drive. Releasing the screw drive may require cutting into the side of the grip. Looking for a solution to get the grip off the camera.
