I will go on a 9 day Safari to Botswana (Chobe) and South Africa (Madikwe) in mid September.
I will take the Canon 200-400 + 70-200 f/2.8 + 24-70 f/2.8 II. Do you think that this suite is adequate?

I will also take the Canon 1DX Mark II but need some advice regarding a second body (1DX, 5D3 or 7D2).

Thank you for your recommendation/s.

looks like you have everything covered. i would take the 1dx as a back up, cant go wrong with a 1 series in a harsh/hot climate. looking forward to seeing your pics.

I recently went to South Africa for three days of safari. (I was there for other reasons and will return to live there soon, hence the short trip this time). I took my 5D3 and the Canon 100-400L, version II. I had some wider and some faster lenses with me, but used the 100-400 for about 95% of the work. We took a river cruise to photograph hippopotamus and spent two days in a nature park shooting from open car windows. I think your gear is more than adequate, especially with the 70-200 f/2.8. Have a wonderful trip.

I did South Africa a few years ago.

I took my 7D with the 100-400 Lens. For a second body I used a compact Sony NEX with an 18mm to 50mm zoom lens. (It's a removable lens mirrorless compact camera with an APS-C sized sensor).

I was happy with my decision to use a compact for a second body. We took a Land Rover on safari. Most of the time, the 7D with the long lens worked very well.. But now and then something close-in provided an opportunity for shooting in wide angle. When this happened, I just snatched the compact off my lap and used it.

It would have been much more awkward carrying two full sized DSLR bodies with lenses -- Especially in a bouncing Land Rover. Having a single body and changing lenses would have been a nightmare.

Also.. The compact was handy for traveling light while walking around in populated areas.
