Roys Peak is a fantastic mountain trail that rewards you with fantastic views once you reach the top. You have to earn it though, as it is uphill the entire way, climbing about 1,300m in elevation over 8km. It's about 6 hours roundtrip.

I had hoped to start the trail EARLY in the morning, but sadly I couldn't quite pull myself out of bed early enough. I still hit the trail in complete darkness, but probably only made it about halfway when the sun began to rise above the horizon. Still got high enough for some fantastic views!

Once you finally reach the top, you can take a break and enjoy 180 degree views across Lake Wanaka from atop this iconic perch just below the summit:

AH! Nice photos! I wanted to hit Roy's Peak when we went out to NZ last fall but we just didn't have time. We did the nearby Diamond Lake tramp instead.

Thanks! I'm looking to return myself - to do it all over again and discover even more! :)

Yeah it can be a bit of a commitment. When I hit the trail I only saw a couple people by the time I got to the top. On my way down, though... so many people!

I don't recall coming across Diamond Lake, will have to mark that for next time :)

nicely done! thanks for posting the video as suspect my fitness levels would preclude me seeing the view first-hand...

some fairly old canon camera stuff, canon lenses, Manfrotto "thingy", and an M5, also an M6 that has had a 720nm filter bolted onto the sensor:
