What Type of Paper for B&W Portrait

The title says it all. I want to print out a B&W male portrait photo and was wondering what papers would potn recommend? I believe that ive read about steel papers or something like that. I dont know if that would be a good choice. In any case im pretty clueless

Fuji Pearl, or Kodak Metallic, it's essentially the same type of surface finish for prints on photographic wet process paper. They can work really well for black and white images, although these finishes are most well known for their highly vibrant colours. It all depends on how you are planning to do the printing, at home using an inkjet printer, or at a lab; saying that many labs print using both traditional wet process photographic techniques, and also on inkjet, depending on what products you actually want.

As well as the Pearl/Metallic finishes I also really like getting B&W prints done on traditional Ilford silver halide photographic papers. With those you have the choice of gloss or matt Resin Coated papers, or if you want to go the whole hog there is a Fiber Based, Baryta paper too, which is a sort of semi gloss. I only know of one lab that offers these and they are not cheap, see www.whitewall.com.

There are also a number of different "fine art" inkjet papers available, either for printing at home, or via a commercial lab. Most "fine art" papers do seem to be in a matt finish, with differing levels of texture in the paper.

Really though It is difficult to make a suggestion of what may be the best paper for printing any image on, without seeing the image.

Well if I were printing this image, and I wanted the absolutely best quality print then it would be on the Ilford MGIV FB Baryta from Whitewall. Unfortunately it is also the most expensive option, but given the low key nature, and those wonderful midtones it has got to be worthwhile going that route. If you go to a gallery and look at modern prints of some of the greats of black and white photography, prints sold as silver gelatine will have been printed using this digital exposure technique, on this paper.

Oh and it is a stunning example of a black and white portrait.
