I recently purchased a Canon 135 f/2 Lens and while I have my share of Lenses, I don't think I've ever experienced what I am with this one.

So I have it attached to my M5 with the Canon Adapter and upon turning it on, it just hunts for FOCUS on it's own, now could this be because I'm indoors and well in a tight area? I just didn't think it would be hunting for focus when I'm not even touching the Shutter.

If anyone that has experience with this lens can shed some light, it would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

It's how you have your M5 set, probably set to automatically focus on whatever your tracking setting is on the M5. Makes me think you have it in video mode. It's not the lens.

Very best,

Turn off the camera, take everything apart, make sure all contacts are clean, reconnect and turn camera on again.

Is the light level low? My M series cameras hunt a lot in low light.
Are you trying to focus on something close near or within the minimum focus distance?
Just throwing out ideas.

Very best,

It was definitely not in Video mode, that I'm sure of, But I will check to see if there is any AUTO tracking settings on the M5.

This was my best guess because as mentioned when using it, i was indoors in a not so well lit and tight area. I will attempt it outdoors today and put it on my 5D mk3 and see if the results are the same.. Thank you everyone for your insights.

probably this ^^^

you mentioned having other lenses, maybe we were to assume you tried other canon lenses on the same mount and had no problems, but have you?

Yes this is true, i have used other lenses and did not experience this. but they were much shorter focal lengths which did not require the hunt ie; 35 1.4 and 24-70 2.8

I just threw the lens on my 5d in the same environment and i did not notice the hunting at all. So I'm left to assume it's definitely an AUTO Focus search party function on my m5 that has it going LOCO when attached.

Unless you turn the feature off (I did), the M5 will try to focus all the time to maintain a sharp image of what it thinks is the subject on the viewfinder/screen. You need to go in to the settings and turn it off.

I don't recall what that setting is called off-hand and can't grab my M5 to take a look right now.

I've not used the 135 f/2 but I imagine it has a finer focusing mechanism with a longer throw than other lenses you've used on the M5, making this more noticeable.

Yea that was definitely the issue, the continuous Auto Focus feature was on and made it go crazy lol... Thanks a bundle to everyone. I really thought the mechanics on the lens were bad since i hadn't experienced it going that crazy with the other lenses even w/that feature on.

Everyone should keep that "continuous focus" option off.
Apart from the fact it is a nonsense option even for beginners, it will shorten your lens AF motor life.
