Hey folks,

I shoot quite a bit of sport and event photography and this is my set up

7d2 with 300 f2.8
6d with 70-200 f2.8

I'm wanting to add another body and I've got two options in mind based on a strict budget of $1400 NZD

Option 1
Used 7d2
Pros: Great FPS, I know the camera very well, great auto focus, solid weather sealing, USB 3
Cons: wont feel like i'm getting a new camera, 50-60k shutter count for same price as new 80d

Option 2
New 80d
Pros: Flippy touch screen, light weight, more gimmicky stuff, wifi
Cons: USB 2, slower af & fps

I'm really torn, my heart wants a new camera but my head wants a 2nd 7d2

My set up will likely be like this when shooting field sports

300mm on 7d2
70-200 on 80d or used 7d2
24-70 or fisheye on 6d

Thanks, Jason

maybe a used 1DX?
It may cost a little bit more than a used 7D2 but it should also offer much better iq

How about the SL2? It is a mini 80D, with all the benefits other than the AF system, also leaving you some money for other accessories.

Good AF is one of the most important things for me, I managed to get a used 7d2 with 3 batteries and a grip for a good price, I really did want the 80d for its gadget appeal but the 7d2 is the better work horse

I agree with FuturamaJSP.
How about a 2nd hand 1DX?

I still can't believe that Canon put 1 cross and 8 non cross point af in a dslr in 2017
it's just sooo 2007

I can't believe Canon put a 2011 DR sensor in a new FF offering either, so what are we to do? :)

Canon put a lesser DR sensor in the 6D2 but the 80D AF, and the 80D sensor in the SL1 with the 5D2 AF. Perhaps somebody misread the specs and got a couple of things switched around before the plans went to manufacturing? :D Kinda like how those doctors amputate the wrong limb?

I personally think Canon has run out of steam , but nobody else agrees with me, so take that for what it is worth. Doesn't bother me, I love my 7D2 and 5D4 combo, they collectively do everything I need them to do. I just need a couple of new lenses, and I am set. The SL2 is my wife's real estate gear, and our travel camera.

Btw, the SL2 tracks sports with the 55-250 pretty well, what little time I had at the game with it.

100% crop for a baby rebel and a $150 zoom, it does pretty well. Next, time to put my Ls on it.

Stick with what you have.

Save & wait until spending that kind of money actually nets you a gain.

Very best,
