I'd like to get an easy turnkey setup for my 5DM3 to use with my MacBook Pro and iPad.

1. Is there a long delay between pressing the shutter and the photo displaying when shooting RAW?

2. Is there a way to just use an iPad as a monitor without it copying the files to it?

Thanks.

The questions seem mutually exclusive. If you a using the IPAD as a monitor only, with no photos going to it, how can there be a delay before the photo is displayed. It has to go to the laptop before it can be displayed.

EOS Utility for Windows will do what you want, but I'm not sure about the timing thing. But timing is only a factor if you want the PHOTO displayed on the screen.

you could get something like camranger, or do a DIY version, like this:

or get a camera with wifi...hooking it up to an ipad is super easy, photos pop up fairly quickly, and you can just view them on the ipad without downloading them

I meant I figured there could still be some lag between composing a shot and seeing it on the iPad. That is what I was wondering about. I guess I could have the photo go to the iPad, I don't see myself editing on it, and it just seems like a pain to then transfer back to the computer.

If you are only using the "computer" to look at the image, not any furhter editing, you win a lot in performance if you store a RAW on one card and a JPEG on the other, and then only transfer the jpeg to the computer. I typically save a small, low quality jpeg for that purpose. It's still good enough to fill the screen on my computer.
If you have only one card, you store both on the same, obviously.

If you want to use it like this, then I find FTP transfer to be better than EOS Utilities. FTP is using power only when transmitting.

But if you want real-time viewing on the computer, to use it as a rangefinder, then EOS Utilities is a solution.
