Having been saving diligently for an F2.8 Non IS 70 - 200 Canon lens, (I don't like credit) I almost saved enough this time, last year to buy one at a main chain shop for £950, not quite enough in the piggie bank so held on a bit.

Then comes Brexit doom and gloom, we're all gonna dieeee, and the £ dropping, lens is now (several weeks ago) £1160, Hmmm. Yesterday went to the big city, chain store (John Lewis for any UK visitors that know)
Lens is now £1350, yike,

Am I the only one that thinks this is taking the pxxx? I have not noticed anything else jump this fast, nor is the pound still worth tuppence any more, £1 = $1.30 approx currently. it's down but not massively so, and certainly not against the Dollar.

Am I paranoid, or is there some form of profiteering amongst Photo stores? I've watched this lens, and other kit climb rapidly in price of late, massive jumps, that are unjustified in my opinion, and curiously, almost ALL stores (bar the grey importers) sell the same kit at the same prices.

Can you have a photo cartel? I know there are RRPs but some how I think UK buyers are being shafted.
Would be interested to know others' thoughts.

we've always suffered at the merest whiff a run on sterling. yes, it's opportunism, but it's a capitalist society so someone, somewhere is going to make a buck. why not look for interest free credit from some of the larger stores?

If you want to go the grey import route that lens is currently £865 at certain online outlets.

I feel your pain Rob. I'm fed up getting ripped off in the UK. Sometimes there may be justification for a physical item to cost more but it winds me up when the likes of Adobe charge more in Europe for the likes of a Photoshop subscription compared to the US. Its being downloaded from the same server and tax differences don't account for it either.

Anyway, regarding your lens.... I can see from http://www.camerapricebuster.co.uk …F-70-200mm-f2.8L-USM-Lens (external link) that the lowest price for that lens did increase after Brexit vote but the average price has remained about the same. It is currently shown cheapest at "Mifsuds" at £1197.

Are customs going to pester you if you bring one back from the "Continent"? After all Brexit is not biting yet as London and Brussels are still stuck in the lengthy preliminaries of how to settle the break.

There are no customs at the moment as we are still in the single market with the rest of Europe. The reason the prices have gone up is because of the unfavourable exchange rate. The OP will still suffer from that if he buys his lens in Europe, paying in euros.

Yes, grey imports can be problematic if you are buying from abroad. Buy from a supplier in China or Japan and you have no UK warranty, any problems and it has to go back to where you got it from for warranty work. There are also potential issues with it getting stopped at customs and slapped with a large tax demand that you need to pay to take delivery.

Even in the UK, some grey imports are sold by small operations with minimal paperwork. Often the "UK address" is a mail drop and the items are actually sent from abroad.

However, not all grey import dealers are risky propositions. I use HDEW for most of my stuff, a pukka bricks and mortar UK store which provides full UK VAT receipts. Unlike some smaller operations, you know you are getting an item with all duties paid on it. As for warranty, the VAT receipt is generally sufficient for Canon to provide direct warranty service, although technically they could refuse they normally cover any UK sold item with a full receipt. If you should have any issues with that, HDEW will cover it and provide service themselves through Canon authorised repair centres in the UK. With camera bodies it is even better, as they provide a 3 year warranty (Canon only provides 1 year). The first year is covered by Canon as usual, the next 2 by HDEW as above.

Like you, I was wary about grey imports, so I checked out HDEW carefully before buying from them. I found many, many recommendations across several photo forums (including POTN) and any problems / servicing issues had been quickly and promptly dealt with to the buyers satisfaction. I couldn't find one story where somebody had been left dissatisfied by the service or warranty. I can't testify personally about the warranty as I have never had an issue with anything from them, so never needed to use it, but I am happy from my research that I would have had no problems had I needed it.

They currently list that lens at £899 which gets it back in the ball park you were originally looking at. Of course, you should do your own "due diligence" and check them out, but I am so happy with them so far that I am about to buy another few grands worth of kit from them in the next few weeks.

Incidentally, my first grey import was a 100-400L back in about 2002, it cost me £840 (if memory serves, they were around £1250 normally). I had that lens until 2014, when I sold it on ebay for £780. Not bad depreciation for 12 years usage.

I have not myself yet used a grey importer, but on the UK Talk photography forum there are many people that use HDEW and Panamoz for their gear. I don't remember reading any complaints and said they have had great service.

I've not come across HDEW before. But they seem to offer an impressive service based on your description of it. I will take a look at what they offer, next time I am in the market for new kit.

For myself, I can recommend Panamoz. Good prices and they offer a similar three-year warranty ... ultimately, they will pay for repairs at Canon UK. I have never used that facility but ... you can check on-line ... they honour their promise. Delivery is very fast. Communication is excellent. Panamoz's currently quoted price is £961. So not quite as good as what HDEW appears to be offering.

Actually, you should check the conversion not from the US$, but rather from Japanes Yen. Over the year the Yen got to be much stronger, last Oct-Nov it was 126 per GB pound, now it is 144.

I'd seriously consider a used lens if money is tight. I have bought and sold via MPB photographic and their service is excellent and descriptions accurate. They give a 6 month warranty on all gear and won't deal in grey imports. Not the very cheapest way to buy used but one of the safest IMO.
If buying new from Europe, Photospecialist are excellent-got a 400 DOII from them for £4800 all tax paid and full warranty when UK cost was 7K. Unfortunately not so cheap since Brexit vote but still very competitive and would happily buy from them again.

I have been very well-served by London Camera Exchange for a good second-hand copy of a quite exotic lens that I couldn't, anyway, find available new at 150% of the price (I guess Canon must manufacture these rarer lenses in just small batches from time to time).

But in this case I'd still go for a grey market purchase from a well-trusted supplier.

I noticed UK prices have been all over the place this year.
That said, Park Cameras have had some cracking deals of late.

Their best current deal is a 7D mkii plus 24-70 f4 l for just over £1400.
Going on other store prices, you get the lens for about £150.

Interesting thread............ I was going to put up a post with regards to where UK people purchase their equipment from as I am soon to be on the lookout to purchase a Canon 100-400mm L II.

Never too sure on the grey import side of things but HDEW seem to be ok from what people are saying. They have the lens I am looking at for a little over £1.5k but most other UK 'stores' etc have it for about £1.7k, so there is a difference of about £200 pound or so, but is that worth the risk?

Wouldn't mind going the second hand route but there doesn't seem to be too many of these around at the moment on the second hand market and the ones that are, do not seem to be much cheaper than going new. -?
