I am currently shooting with a 7d Markll and 150-600 sigma sport. I shoot mostly wildlife but enjoy shooting landscape as well. I am deciding between a new camera or glass. The camera would be a 5d mark4. A little more money than I am wanting to spend but I will swing it if I go with a new body. The glass I am looking at would be a canon 70-200 2.8 ll or a canon 100-400 ll. The main reason for the new body is better image quality and the higher iso with better results. I hear great things about the 100-400 and I am wondering how it will compare to the 70-200 in image quality. I know the 70-200 will perform better in low light but I give up a lot of reach. The reason for one of the two lenses is it is a lot lighter for hikes and such than my 150-600. Any input or other ideas would be very much appreciated.

I would not worry too much these days between a few stops of difference between the 100-400 II and the 70-200 2.8 II for low light with sensors like the 5D4 has. More for bokeh at F2.8 but you can get great bokeh at f8 and even f11 shooting wildlife.

This is a crop at 32,000 with my 5D4 and 100-400 II

IQ between both those 2 lenses is negligible. For wildlife you are really going backwards with 200mm. Unofficial rule of thumb suggested minimal for wildlife is 400mm.

If you are used to 600mm with a crop you will have an adjustment with 400mm and a FF. I rarely used my 1.4 III on my 7D2 but use it a lot on my 5D4 and I'm happy with the IQ.

Funny as I was considering a Sigma Sport or Contemporary to add to my 100-400 II. I may have misunderstood your second last sentence. You not happy with your Sig?

I used the Tamron 150-600 for a couple years. When the light was good, a fine lens with my 7D2. After seeing the results a couple friends were having with the 100-400 v2, I bought one. Without question it is an incredible lens, and I cannot recommend it highly enough. It seems to work particularly well with the 7D2.

As good as your Sigma likely is (I have a couple other Sigma lenses that I like very much), the Canon 100-400 will outperform it with an APS-C or a full frame camera. The newest version of the 1.4 TC is a good add to the lens if it fits into the budget.

Thanks for your input. I think the 100-400 is probably the best route for me and shooting wildlife. I would use it when I am hiking or when the wildlife is closer most of the time. Everything I read is great about that lens. I really like my sigma. Very happy with it. I got some great shots of grizzlies in Yellowstone this spring. I wish I would of had the 100-400 one of the days as I had a grizzly and two Cubs right out the window of my truck.

It is a very popular lens. If you stick in on a 5D4 with a 1.4 TC at f8 all 61 AF points are available whereas the 7D2 only offers centre which you can't move around and 4 point expansion. Not that it won't work great on a 7D2.

If you get a TC get version III.
