Hello all,

been a while for me, thought to ask you guys for your input and see if this issue has happened to anyone else Canon 7D? I was using it for my sons party. Put the camera down and the next morning it just wouldn't power on. I cant think of any reason why this would happen. I left the camera "on" which times out and sleeps the camera any other time. Could that be it? I have surly done that before though, so I am really confused on why this happened.

Anyway, I did all the tricks of opening the bottom to see if any screws were laying around within the camera, I did the checks suggested by Canon. Nothing.
So I sent it in and they quoted me $560 for parts and labor. Thats a good $160 more than a used 7d at the moment. I don't think that is even worth it. Any thoughts? Anyone out there experience anything similar?

Thanks all

The most common issue if you don't turn the camera off is that it's sitting on the trigger button, so it's half-pressed all the time. That drains the battery pretty quickly.

But since they want to repair it, that's obviously not the case here.

If you think a general used 7D is at least as good as yours, you can just as well buy another one. Or browse around among the new models that have showed up since the introduction of the 7D in 2009.

That's fairly odd.

I would think a fresh battery (get another battery if you don't already have several), turn it on without the battery (to discharge the board), then start with a fresh new battery (or at least a different battery than previous used), with no lens attached and make sure you cycle the menus (display/info) to see if it's on and displaying something but was simply muted (LCD wise).

A mint 7D used is $400~450. Definitely not worth the repair quote.

And frankly at this point, you'd be able to also explore a new camera as an option even instead of continuing with the 7D, if you were so inclined. Such as a 1D Mark III or a look for a refurb 80D.

Very best,

1: Remove and re-insert the battery grip.

or

2: Remove the main battery and remove the backup battery, als known as the Date/Time battery. Leave it for about an hour or two and re-insert the backup battery and the main battery.

or

3: Disable MagicLantern or use a nonbootable CF card.

I once had a 7D which suddenly stopped working.
Removing the battery grip helped at that time.
It happened 5 or 6 times again.
After that the body died as you discribed.
I have sent it for repairs and it was was diagnosed with a faulty mainboard.
I paid 350 Euro for repair.

Hope this helps.

My 5D(c) was being used in a product shoot, and I had taken two photos with it. I let it go to sleep while I altered the set, and then went to shoot more photos...it would not wake/turn on at all. I found a place that would repair the camera for me, and it turned out to be the main circuit that needed replacement. Price for new main circuit (and to have the mirror 'fix' which had not ever been done) was about $400, if I recall correctly (over a year ago), but since the shutter itself had under 10k actuations, I felt fixing it was better than buying a used camera with a lot more shutter wear in its history, and at the time I could not find a used 5DII for under $700 (IIRC) so I decided to put the money into repair of my 5D instead.

So consider how many shutter actuations on your 7D...it might be well worth repair to keep a body with low shutter count, rather than buying a used camera from someone with a lot more shutter wear accumulated.

As Canon no longer serviced 5d(c) (and all they offered was $60 against the purchase of a new or refurb camera!), I found an independent shop, Garry's Camera Repair, in Illinois, who repaired the camera for me.

I am going to try this and hope for the best. When canon had me do this, they had me switch the camera on without any batteries or cards, for about 30 seconds to drain whats left. I am going to fully charge my battery and try again, but this time leaving the camera switched on for a bit longer to try and see if it needs to be drained more...
