Warranty card needed for repairs?

sorry if this is the wrong place to post this please forgive me if it is.

I have a question, now I understand that grey market items are not "supposed" to be serviced by canon, yet in most cases they seem to do the warranty repairs on these. I purchased a new 5d Mark IV a while ago that came without a warranty card in the box. my question is, when canon repairs does do the warranty repairs on their items, is the warranty card needed, or just a proof of purchase?

here is a response that I got from another board

All the warranty card does is to get you registered so you can get advertising, and recall notices. I'd always register a gray market camera as soon as you get it, that helps establish the warranty.

For warranty repair, they want your sales receipt from a authorized dealer, but they seem to accept gray market.

Most gray market sellers provide a warranty, so ask the seller about their warranty if Canon will not repair it.

and my response

thank you for the response. I never got the warranty card in the box(which I believe it should have came with but I could be wrong), but if I'm a CPS member and register the camera there, would this be basically the same thing?
Also, hopefully, I never need the warranty repair, as although I have heard a few bad things about the company in regards to completely unrelated camera gear(seems the macbook airs they sell have many negative reviews), everyone seems happy about their DSLR purchases through them. with this being said, I have heard that dealing with them for anything after purchasing can be a complete nightmare, so hope if anything does happen *knock on wood* that I am able to go straight to canon and receive the necessary help.

probably depends on what country you live in & the applicable laws. In New Zealand our first port of call for warranty is the supplier/seller of the goods...

some fairly old canon camera stuff, canon lenses, Manfrotto "thingy", and an M5, also an M6 that has had a 720nm filter bolted onto the sensor:

I see Prime Visual Productions may be in the Chicago area (area code is 773).

From what I have read, getting warranty service on a grey market Canon product is "hit or miss." Some people report they got service, some not. So you don't know until you try. You might look into 3rd party coverage should you be concerned.

Why don't you ask Canon?

^^^

Each camera brand is different in how they handled servicing of gray market goods.

  • Nikon USA has always been 'hard nosed' and refuse to do any work, whether during warranty or post warranty!
  • Canon USA for many years been somewhat lenient and work on gray market goods (I do not know about any distinction of in-warranty vs. post-warranty work), but the current official Canon USA stance actually is very similar to Nikon USA hardline approach.

The Warranty Card itself has never been needed by Canon USA, they want the owner to provide a Purchase Receipt when warranty work is requested.

I have sent in decent number of cameras and lenses over the years and they have never asked for the warranty card, but always want proof of purchase. As far as I can tell the warranty cards are a complete waste of time.

I have never tried with a grey market, but I've also never heard of anyone on this forum having a problem.
