Effect of monitor calibration on your histogram?

Will my histogram change based on the brightness settings of my monitor? In other words, if my monitor is too bright, will Lightroom (for example) recognize this brightness and show a more skewed histogram because of it?

They should not affect each other at all.

I guess it makes sense as the back of the camera shows a histogram and it doesn't change based on how bright or dark I make the camera LCD.

Agree. Unless you are taking photo OF YOUR MONITOR, no effect on the histogram. That is FILE data.

The histogram is a representation of the data. The data doesn't change just because you turn your monitor brightness up or down.

However, the brightness and calibration of your monitor will affect how you process the image which in turn will affect the histogram. It might look fantastic on your setup and complete crap on another machine.

That's what makes a calibration system invaluable IMO (they also look for optimal brightness). Of course the image might still look crappy on certain uncalibrated monitors, but there's a better chance of it looking good on most systems.
