I cant seem to find any. Although could be im using wrong search terms? Does anyone know of reviews pitting these two lenses together? Maybe because one is EFS and one is EF that there arent 1:1 comparisons? Might be apples/oranges? Just seeing which more-compact lens I should get for the SL2 im planning to get. The IS version would be obviously more flexible to use on my other cameras for sure. if the EFS performs better however, then I have to reconsider.

TDP does a quick comparison of the two lens in this review:
http://www.the-digital-picture.com …8-IS-USM-Lens-Review.aspx (external link)

If you have the extra money and don't care about lens size, get the IS lens.
If you don't care about IS, shoot video, and don't think about going full-frame anytime soon, then get the STM.

-I have full frame bodies that this could be used for but mostly it will stay with a apsc body
-I dont care about video
-IS is a bonus but not necesary
-Lens size is an issue but both of these are rather compact anyways so it wont matter
-Price-wise, these two arent too expensive per say so price doesnt matter either

Mostly care about pic quality, sharpness and maybe IQ.

Heya,

I'd get the 24 F2.8 IS if you want basically an L quality lens without the red stripe. The IS is very useful.

The ONLY benefit to the 24 STM is that its a pancake design. It's decently sharp, not fast to focus (we have one, it's sluggish like the 40 STM is and isn't silent), but it's great because it's so small. That's it though. You get the 24 pancake because its a pancake and you're wanting the smallest kit possible.

If having another 2 inches of lens on your camera isn't a big deal, the 24 F2.8 IS adds everything superior. You pay more. You get more though. The IS alone would be what I would suggest it for, along with silent, fast AF. But the 4 stop IS is really, really nice. It'll be nearly as big as the SL2, hah, but again, I would say its worth it.

So just figure out if you need smallest size possible via a pancake design, or if you want the best glass between the two and IS which is very useful, with basically L level quality. Price difference is there of course.

Very best,

Very best,

very helpful, thank you! size doesnt matter if the IS version outs the pancake in image quality and focus speed. (size/price will start to matter however if we are comparing the IS vs the L). I really dont need a L lens for what I do with the SL2 (just a travel cam).

The 24 F2.8 IS is better than the 24L in many ways. The 24L just has the F1.4 option if you really need it. I'd rather have modern 4 stop IS over 2 stops though, on a wide angle lens. It's just universally more useful. It's all just user preference.

The new F2.8 IS prime reboots have image quality that is of L level (the 24, 28 and 35 F2). They don't have the same construction and don't have weather sealing (not that many L's actually do mind you). But if you want top performance without L prices, and keep it smaller (F1.4 makes it physically bigger and heavier of course), then the newer F2.8 IS options are the way to go.

Again, I have both and the 24 STM even and while it's a great little lens, it's only advantage is smaller size if that's the most important thing. If the budget allows for the F2.8 IS as an option, I'd go that way without hesitation.

Very best,

fully agreed. I rarely shoot under 2.8 anyways. Planning to pickup this 24 as well as look into the 35 f2 also. Heard the 35 f2 is also wonderful.

Well the efs 24 is in my opinion a great value for money
sharp small and low cost
I used it on a rebel as a point and shoot combo (now i use the m6)
For less than $150 just try it and if you really like the combo on the crop consider the upgrade
